I absolutely despise Farengar's voice. No emotion whatsoever.

That goes back t what I said: What would your character choose? If they hate vampires, I highly doubt that character should do the Volkihar quests. For a vampire hater, Dawnguard is what you want. For someone who doesn't really care about vamps and hates the Vigilants of Stendarr, Volkihar is...
Really, the deciding factor should not be which has better benefits. Ask yourself: which would my character choose? Answer that, and you know where to go. Most of my characters hate vampires, but I have one or two that would love the idea of becoming a vampire.
That's why I don't rely on alerts. I use the Watched Threads page instead, which is a lot more reliable. I've not had that issue yet, but being in the habit of using the Watched Threads page instead will prove helpful if it does happen.
