This was a while ago, but I did this quest with no hitches. Everything was clear cut. I don't remember who Mavin was, he's not the one you're stealing the horse from is he? I don't remember telling anyone about the plan, I just snuck into the lodge, found the papers, and left.

I'm like Save above, and have Dawnbreaker & the Pale Blade hanging on the wall. I never even used Dawnbreaker, though the Pale Blade was my best weapon for a while. Now the custom equipment rules :)

How do I get the Black Star if I already brought the thing to the shrine but haven't entered and cleansed the star yet? I did not find out Azura's Star is the reusable black gem until after I brought it to the shrine. I don't want a reusable grand gem, I'm evil and want to harvest human souls...

Are you using the effect that only fortifies destruction? If so, and you're enchanting is maxed in the right perks then it should give you 25%. So, beyond that, I don't know. If your enchant is at 100% then you really need to get the dual-effect perk. Then you can use both fortify...
