Illusion spells keep failing on tougher enemies—am I leveling it wrong?

I'm running a pure mage build on my second playthrough (level 31, Adept difficulty) and I've hit a wall with Illusion. Fury and Mayhem spells work great on trash mobs, but the second I cast them on anything that matters—dragons, tough melee guys, bosses—they just shrug it off like I'm casting nothing. My Destruction spells still hit hard, so it's not a gear problem.

Is this just how Illusion scales, or am I missing a perk that actually makes it work on harder enemies? Feels like I'm carrying dead weight in my spell list right now and I'm not sure if I should just pivot to pure Destruction or if there's a way to make this actually viable.

Yeah, Illusion hits a hard ceiling on tougher enemies and it's not really a playstyle problem on your end. The school just scales badly compared to Destruction because enemy Illusion resistance doesn't have a good counter like Destruction perks do.

Here's the thing though - you're not carrying dead weight if you lean into what Illusion actually does well. Fury and Mayhem work great on those trash mobs specifically because they're designed to turn groups against each other, not to control individual strong enemies. For dragons and bosses, you want to pivot your spell selection. Calm and Pacify are way more useful than people think - they don't "fail" on tough enemies the same way Fury does, they just make enemies stop attacking for a bit. Invisibility is also absurdly good if you spec into it, lets you reposition or just nuke something with Destruction while it can't see you.

If you want Illusion to feel less dead weight, grab the perk that reduces spell costs (can't remember the exact name but it's early in the tree) and the one that makes spells quieter - that one's actually useful for staying undetected. The perk that extends spell duration is solid too. But honestly if you're on Adept and want pure mage to feel viable, you might need to accept that Illusion is more of a utility school than a damage dealer. Pair it with Restoration (healing, buffs) and Alteration (mage armor spells, paralysis) and suddenly your mage build feels way more complete than pure Destruction.

What difficulty are you planning to push to eventually? That might change whether Illusion is worth the investment or if you should just lean harder into Destruction + Alteration.

The previous reply nailed it, but I'll add: if you're on PC, there are mods that genuinely fix Illusion's scaling problem without breaking the game. Ordinator (the perk overhaul) redesigns the whole tree so Illusion actually has ways to affect tougher enemies - stuff like making affected enemies take more damage, or perks that let Illusion spells land on things that would normally resist them. It's not a crutch either, you still have to build around it.

That said, don't sleep on what was already mentioned about Calm / Pacify. Those spells are legitimately broken good if you use them right. A calm spell on a dragon buys you like 10-15 seconds to either nuke it with Destruction or just... leave. On Adept that's basically a free win. Invisibility potions + Invisibility spell stacking is also stupid powerful if you're willing to get a little creative.

The real issue is Illusion players expect it to do what Destruction does (raw damage output) when it's actually more like playing a support class. If that doesn't appeal to you, yeah, pivot to Destruction + Alteration + maybe Conjuration. Nothing wrong with that. But "Illusion doesn't work" and "Illusion works differently than you're using it" are two different problems.
