Destruction spells feel weak until you grab Augmented perks—how do people level it early?

I'm on my third playthrough and I always skip Destruction because my frost bolts feel like I'm tickling enemies until I'm deep enough to grab the damage boost perks. Playing on Legendary difficulty, so maybe that's part of it, but I'm curious how people actually use Destruction as a main skill without just pivoting to Conjuration by level 15. Do you just tank the early game, or is there a perk path / playstyle I'm missing that makes it viable from the start?

Legendary difficulty is definitely part of it, but you're not wrong that vanilla Destruction feels gutted until you grab Augmented. That said, there's a few things that make it actually playable early on.

First - and this is the big one - you need to abuse the hell out of crowd control. Frost isn't about damage, it's about slowing enemies down so they can't close the gap. Pair it with a perk that staggers on hit (there's one in the Destruction tree) and suddenly you're locking down melee fighters instead of just tickling them. On Legendary this matters way more than raw numbers.

Second, gear matters. Get yourself some magicka regen gear early - even basic enchanted robes from Dragonsreach or the College will help you cast more frequently. You're not meant to one-shot anything, you're meant to cast constantly. More casts = more crowd control = you stay alive.

Third, don't play pure Destruction. Grab a dagger or sword as backup and use Destruction to control, then swap for the kill. Or go full mage and grab Conjuration for a meat shield - yeah it feels like cheating but it's literally how the game balances mage difficulty. One conjured dremora lord trivializes early game, and honestly if that's what it takes to not hate yourself, do it.

Honestly the real answer is that vanilla Destruction is just... not great until mid-levels. If you want it to feel good from level 1, Ordinator (if you're on PC) completely overhauls the tree and makes early Destruction actually fun. Otherwise you're gonna have a rough 15-20 levels no matter what you do.

Yeah, that's solid advice. I'd add that the perk tree path matters more than people realize - you're basically forced into a specific order on vanilla if you want early viability. Skip the damage perks entirely at first and beeline for impact (the stagger one they mentioned) and maybe the mana cost reduction stuff. Sounds backwards but it actually works.

Also - and this might sound weird - but early game Destruction gets a huge boost if you're willing to use poisons. Paralysis especially trivializes Legendary difficulty, and pairing that with even weak frost bolts means enemies just... stop existing as threats. It's not the spell doing the work, sure, but you're still a mage and it feels way better than pure conjuration carry.

If you're on PC and modding anyway, Apocalypse adds a bunch of early-game viable spells that actually scale differently (some are utility-focused, some do weird stuff with positioning) so you're not just casting the same frost bolt over and over. Makes the skill feel less one-note while you grind toward the perks that matter. Ordinator is the bigger overhaul but Apocalypse alone helps a ton without rewriting the whole system.

That said - don't force it if you're not having fun. Destruction's genuinely the weakest pure magic option in vanilla until you're like level 30+. Swapping to Conjuration or going hybrid isn't giving up, it's just how the game balances out.
