I am in a similar situation. I am currently playing a Dunmer Sniper, and I tried the Vampires first, but the lack of crossbows and daytime penalties annoyed me too much. I made a new save with the Dawnguard, and I think I prefer it better, but I agree I am beginning to resent killing vampires...

Actually, Argonians make good summoners. You need to look at the race overall. Conjuration isn't just about having enough mana, it's about being able to survive. The Argonian racial ability is very useful for summoners at low levels.
