I do agree about the whole long and repetitive part. But in the end I'd say it was worth going through it all. Since you can smelt the dwemer scarp for some ingots which is at a decent price. Although that's more for people who have a companion/pack mule to carry all that stuff for you.
I tend to mess around with the Fury spell. Especially when someone makes a rather rude comment so it's nice to see guards get attacked or someone do the dirty work for me when I want someone dead. Like the annoying preacher of Talos in Whiterun for example.

I'm a fan myself of Vampirism. Especially with a Thief and/or Assassin build since it helps with that role due to the bonus to sneak. Not to mention Dawnguard's add on which made stage 4 Vampirism more tolerable if you like the powers it gives you and didn't like the whole everyone hating you...
