No Thieves Guild for me

No. She's scum. If anything we're equals in that regard. I can be just as rich and have lots of friends in high places. The only reason I'm nobody is because the game never acknowledges anything I do or allows me to hold a position of power and actually enjoy the benefits of it. She uses the Thieves' Guild and the Dark Brotherhood to achieve her goals. That's underhanded at best. I liken her to a Mafia boss. She may hold a respected place in Riften but she's still a criminal.
True. She's definately not the best and the brightest, but, still. We are not her equals. As the game never acknowledges us and we cannot kill her, there is very little point in even hating her. Just use her for what she's worth and move on. She really can't hurt you either and at least you can Fus her once in a while to make yourself feel better.

What!?! You become the leader of almost everything in the game, companions, mage college, Dark brotherhood and thieves guild.
I don't like all the responsibility, i'd rather be the leader of just one faction. The rest, just a mercenary or someone not that much important.

Next Dlc you'll be the high king of skyrim.

:) At least as High King, Maven would be obligated to treat you with respect though! Or else...

Maven isn't a tenth what she thinks she is, and certainly isn't my equal. Make me mad and I'll put the Dark Brotherhood on you? B*tch please...

Yeah, but it's pretty much in name only. YOU still have to do all the grunt work that you should be able to assign to underlings. And everyone still treats you the same afterward. Farengar still comments that you should go join the College of Winterhold even if you're the friggin' Archmage. I like to think I would've sent him a memo to let him know that little tidbit.

And as head of the Thieves' Guild I should just be able to lie back and enjoy the spoils. I never see anyone else move their lazy butts out of the Ratway.

The way Bethesda does their quests, as High King I'd probably have to go to everyone's doorstep to talk to them personally and listen to the guards comment about how I should give running the kingdom a shot.

Well, she is better than you, so the attitude is understandable. She owns the town, is immensely rich and can basically buy anyone or anything or any service she needs without question and she has lots and lots of friends in high places. Sorry to be pragmatic, but, you're a nobody, she's not. That's the way it works in the game and that's the way it works in real life. Like it or not.
Not to go too far OT, but what dictates who you are and your station in real life has nothing to do with friends in high places, or money, or power. It's how you treat others, every day you walk out the door. The small chances every day to make someone else's life a little better, even if its as simple as saying hello or buying someone food who can't afford it. In my opinion, how you treat people and yourself is what makes you a good person. Not a large savings account.

Ah to be so naive and idealistic again. While it is nice to do the things you noted and may help your karma, the reality is, we live in a world where money, power and who you know are the only things that count. Not your deeds. And nobody really cares how you treat other people (unless you commit a crime that is). Pragmatically speaking, just because I'm nice to people, give to charity and help out my friends and neighbors, it really means jack squat in our society. You have no influence and you really don't matter. It's just a fact of life and always has been so. It is only the very rare person that does good deeds that actually influences the world. I wish it wasn't true, but, unfortunately, it is. Rewards in the next life are no substitute for this one apparently.

...Like Mjoll said, they would betray you in an instant over a septim
Mjoll has little insight into the Thieves Guild which is why her campaign against them is futile. There is loyalty within the Thieves Guild with one notable exception. I actually stopped using Mjoll as a follower because it seemed mean spirited to be the Guild Master and have her trekking around with me like a clueless fool.
They act like there is no other way to defeat Mercer. You are the damn Dragonborn, you slay creatures that are much more deadly than a douchebag thief...
You restore the Trinity as part of the steps towards lifting the curse on the Thieves Guild and restoring Nocturnal's blessing on it. Simply killing Mercer won't do that.
...you`ve got a Cistern full of characters with not a single follower among them...
This was extremely frustrating, especially because it's the largest Guild in Skyrim. Thankfully I have mods that change this. Not only do I have them as followers but I can have up to three of them at the same time.
...if there are occasions where you might have to beat victims in the TG questline to extract any info, no, I would not be interested.
There are none. There is a quest where you have to extort money from people and have the option to beat the up to get them to pay but there is also an option in every case where that can be avoided.
...Next Dlc...
You didn't get the memo?

Ah... Dagmar... a breath of fresh(?) and informative air...

its all business, they are like the robin hoods of Skyrim. Have you ever thought those beggers, are they actually beggars? they are the thieves guilds eyes and ears. They look out for their own and they dont resort to killing and only beat up people for money if they dont end up paying like a land lord

Why would you consider them the "Robin Hoods" of Skyrim? Sure they may steal from the rich, but they really are equal opportunity. They steal from the poor, the middle class and just about everybody else they can steal from. They also don't give anything to the poor. They just keep it for themselves. I'll not say that they're all bad people (I actually like a few of them), but they certainly aren't "Robin Hoods" in my opinion, they're more just "Hoods".

why would business people steal from the poor, they would have to aim high besides they would pay beggars to do eavesdropping and such, as for the nightingale thing its all roleplay so you can tell nocturnal to f herself :)

The Thieves Guild of Cyrodiil in ES IV Oblivion was like that but the Thieves Guild of Skyrim has no affiliations with the beggars and the beggars are neither its beneficiaries nor its eyes and ears.

The people they are extorting money from are hardly high profile. They're working class people. Their marks are varied in their station in life and very few of them are aristocrats. They don't pay beggars for information. Again that was a function in Oblivion but it isn't in Skyrim.

Yep, another means to an end....just like the DB quests, although I would like to be able to delegate the new jobs to the New Recruits. You know, truly become the Listener, rather than have to continuously do those jobs...
That's something that annoyed me about the Dark Brotherhood, they killed off way too many members. They could have spared 1 or 2 more members, preferably Veezara and Festus Krex. The night mother is creepy, I hate those endless jobs from the old bag of bones. I wish there was more advantages of being The Listener

Everyone seems to have an issue with Maven, but ignores the Silver-Bloods are basically like her in every way. They extort businesses to gain ownership, they own the guards, they can decide who goes to prison and who doesn't. They use the Forsworn as assassins to kill whoever they want. Maven isn't the only Jarl with questionable moral standards, stop picking on her.

I think that's largely because you only briefly deal with the Silver-Bloods during the Foresworn Conspiracy quests. You can defy and expose them, as well. Which can be somewhat satisfying. Where as you spend basically all of your time in Riften with your nose pretty well flush to Mavin's butt.

In addition to the massive Thieves Guild quest line that involves her at several points, there's also a number of quests outside of the Thieves Guild that revolve around her. Stealing frost, finding the skooma-dealers, the quill of gemination and so on. Then there's quests with her lovely children, as well.

All the questlines are pretty bland imo. Few exceptions here and there but I get my moneys worth on random stuff happening while exploring.

As far as morality goes... it's a video game. Killing bride pixels is no different than killing deathlord pixels imo.
Maybe to you, but I'm the sensitive sort...:)

So your moral compass allows you to end the lives of people you don't know for money and your own status, but stealing a few trinkets here and there is too much?

Okay :p

I see you point, though
Yup! You hit the nail on the head. Besides, as I said, I wasn't a big fan of the DB storyline. So many bodies. Next time I'm just going to kill 'em all and get it over with. You don't get anything from it. Just wish I could wipe out the thieves and be done with it. Slaughter :); stealing crap :(

So true! I actually like Maven better than the SilverBloods. Maven reminds me of my Mom... oops, sorry Mom, don't mean to give away your secrets... please don't have me beaten up!
