It was all new for me as well, as I'm new to ES, and gaming in general (well, since the late 90's anyway...). :) There are many helpful folks here, so you've come to the right place.
I like the house, however...
After paying for the upgrades, not a single chest. I found that strange. Also, one room in the house is completely empty. Is this just a glitch?
Just started my second build, a one-handed/blocking/heavy armor Orc. I only have a few hours of playing time, but it's a lot of fun. He kicks ass right out of the gate. :)
I'm leaning toward the DB. I really like the shrouded armor, shadwomare, Cicero, and most of the quests, especially the first one. Plus Dawnstar is a cool hangout, even if I do get stalked by elder dragons every freaking time I visit.
Love Cicero! He's the only follower I use. Once, in my house in Windhelm, I was at the bookshelf where I kept the Butcher journals. He said, "OOOH! The Butcher! I've heard of him! STAB STAB STAB!"
Light armor for me, upgraded/improved Thieves Guild, to be precise. I like the look and the mobility, as well as the weight savings to carry a bit more loot. :)
This is pretty much what I was thinking. Standard leather armor, improved and enchanted to your liking, with the ancient shrouded cowl. Personally, I'm wearing Thieves Guild armor (improved) with ancient shrouded boots and cowl. I haven't leveled up in enchanting yet, so this works very well...
Currently on Adept, but planning to give Expert a go here and there, just to test the waters. Since I haven't concentrated my skills/perks toward a specific playing style (didn't really know what I was doing when I started, so my abilities are sort of all over the place), I'm a bit wary of Master.
I'm partial to Cicero. Yes, he's polarizing for sure, and he gets on my nerves at times, but he's good in a fight and can't die, so that's a plus.
He was actually pretty hilarious as I was perusing the "Butcher" journals that were on one of my bookshelves. He was all, "OOOOOOOH!! The...
All of the [completely accurate] responses which suggest the use of melee weapons remind me of something my buddy told me when I started to play Skyrim. "Wizards are squishy."
An Imperial spellsword...who is also a Stormcloak. :) Light armor/destruction/one-handed/archery. Just finished the DB line, so I guess I'm an assassin, but I've only killed as part of a quest, or when attacked.
This is my first build, and I'm level 28, so I haven't encountered most of the really fun stuff yet. So far Ancient Shrouded armor with an ebony bow, ebony arrows, and an ebony sword has worked the best for me.
Not only is this my first build in Skyrim, but this is my first RPG since Star Wars: Dark Forces II (pretty sure that was 97)...so I've been out of the gaming world for some time. I pretty much had to re-learn how this stuff worked, so the learning curve has been massive, across the board.
My...
