Agree that quest is fluffed. You are supposed to kill the bad things. Not the goat or something. I didn't like it either and got sick of it quickly and had to look online for instructions.
And the only way to get the key is to pickpocket the mage dude.
Does it update / download automatically? from Live?
I don't have a gold Live account but I can hook my Xbox up to the router and it connects to Live - albeit very slowly as I' in China- and it is updating SOMETHING but I don't think it's Skyrim.

As I was questing and meandering around the Skyrim world I was on a road in the South- West on a road that went under a gate and they I couldn't progress anymore even though the map shows more area covered by clouds.
At some point - such as after certain quests - does the map open up?
If so...
Once I gave it back I only use 2 or 3 lock picks on the most difficult locks now. It served its purpose but it is only an unbreakable lock pick. That's it. A little lame actually.

Did you buy the house then ask for one? Once you buy the house then talk to the Jarl or his steward and they give you Lydia either there or in the house. But you need to speak to the Jarl or steward again.
I kept it till my lockpick skill was in the 90's. At that point I had amasses about 500 lock picks and a mask and amulet that added +40 or more to skills. Once I had the expert perk I gave it back. Be careful when you give it back - that quest has alot of bugs at the end and make sure to have...
