Sorry but I think you're screwed. IIRC, the skyrim wiki says that if you don't have the old armor, you can't get it upgraded to the guild master armor, and you won't get the ending achievement of the guild questline (if that matters to you).

Quick question~ If I give my companion a weapon enchanted with soul trap, and a bunch of empty soul gems, will they actually capture souls? I was thinking of starting a straight up, no weapon mage, and don't want to be bothered with casting soul trap on the creatures all the time.
