Adopted kids at homesteads feel lonely, anyone else notice this?

So I've been doing a family playthrough and adopted a couple kids, set them up at Lakeview with a steward and everything. But like... they just stand around in the same spots all day? There's no school, no other kids, no NPCs to actually interact with besides the steward. Compare that to Riften or Solitude where they'd at least see other people.

Makes me feel kinda bad honestly. I gave them a nice house but it's basically an empty compound in the middle of nowhere. Am I overthinking this or does anyone else feel weird about it? Wondering if there's actually something I'm missing about how homestead life works for adopted kids, or if this is just how it is in vanilla.
