You dont need to speak to the same guy. You should be able to go to the new Steward(its a chick, I think) and talk to her about it.

be reintroduced as thane. he actually hangs out at the companion's place instead of dragonsreach. inconvenient, i know. but yes, previously stated is the woman in dragonsreach is your new steward. shes kind of a bitch imo
