Alteration is the most slept-on magic school and I'm convinced nobody actually uses it

Seriously. I'm on my 5th playthrough and I just realized I've been ignoring Alteration the entire time like it's some trash utility tree. Played a mage build last week and actually invested in the perk that lets you cast spells while moving, grabbed the perk that reduces magicka costs for Alteration spells, and suddenly I'm not getting destroyed by melee enemies anymore because I can actually kite properly.

Paralysis is obviously the broken one everyone knows about, but the damage mitigation stuff? The spell that lets you move faster? The perk that gives you armor rating from casting? That's genuinely useful and I never see anyone talking about it. Even the teleportation spell has its moments if you're not playing on Legendary where everything one-shots you anyway.

I think the problem is that Alteration doesn't have a flashy damage number so people assume it's bad. But being able to tank hits and reposition while your Destruction mage is still ramping up feels way more viable than I expected. Am I just late to the party on this or does everyone else skip it too?

yeah the repositioning angle is what makes it click for me too. I used to think Alteration was pure utility fluff until I actually played a pure mage without relying on Destruction to carry me. Once you get that perk that boosts armor from spellcasting - the one that stacks with actual armor - you're genuinely tanky in a way Destruction mages never are. You're not one-shotting stuff but you're also not getting deleted the second a dragon or melee enemy closes in.

The speed spell is criminally underrated. People sleep on it because it's not flashy but being able to kite while maintaining DPS pressure is huge, especially on higher difficulties. Paralysis is the obvious broken one like you said, but I'd argue the speed buff is more consistent and doesn't rely on enemy weakness rolls.

That said, I think the reason it gets skipped is just psychological - most people's first instinct is to pump Destruction or Conjuration for the big numbers, and by the time they realize Alteration is good they're already committed elsewhere. Also some of the spells are genuinely situational. The teleportation spell is niche unless you're specifically trying to avoid damage, and the water breathing one only matters if you're exploring underwater dungeons on purpose.

But yeah if you're actually trying to make a pure mage work without trivializing the game, Alteration is way more essential than people give it credit for. Glad you're finding it useful this late in the game.
