Alteration perks feel completely dead—am I leveling it wrong?

I'm on my second playthrough (Legendary difficulty, PC with USSEP) and I keep ignoring Alteration because the perks just seem... inert? Like, I grab Mage Armor for the AC boost and then what—just spam Detect Life for XP? I see people talk about Restoration alchemy loops and Destruction scaling, but nobody mentions Alteration builds. Is there actually a perk order that makes it feel useful, or is it genuinely just a utility school that doesn't pull its weight in combat?

Alteration's actually way more useful than people think, but yeah—the perk tree is weirdly front-loaded and then falls off a cliff. You're not leveling it wrong; the school just needs a specific approach to feel good.

The real payoff is Mage Armor (which you've got) plus the perks that boost it. That's your bread and butter for a pure mage. After that, grab the perk that increases spell duration—makes your buffs actually stick in longer fights instead of needing constant recasting. The staggers-on-hit perk is solid too if you're running Mayhem spells or anything that triggers it repeatedly.

But honestly? The reason people don't talk about Alteration builds is because it's a support school. You're not going to out-DPS Destruction, and it's not as flashy as Conjuration. What it does is make your character absurdly tanky and hard to lock down. Paralysis is one of the best utility spells in the game, and Alteration gets perks that make it land more often. Paralyze one tough enemy, nuke the rest with Destruction, repeat.

If you want it to feel less dead, pair it with Restoration for a proper battlemage—the durability stacking is ridiculous. Or lean into the crowd control angle with Conjuration. Alteration solo is a slog because the perks don't synergize into a thing; they're just scattered utility. But as part of a broader mage build it's genuinely strong.

What difficulty are you on? On Legendary the defensive stuff matters way more, so Alteration actually becomes pretty essential.

That's a solid breakdown, but I'd push back slightly on "Alteration solo is a slog"—it depends hard on how you're using it. The issue is most people treat it like a damage school when it's really about lockdown and prevention.

Paralysis is the key, yeah, but people sleep on how much the perks that extend spell duration actually matter. Your buffs (Mage Armor, whatever else) staying up longer means you're not burning magicka on recasts mid-combat. On Legendary that's the difference between a sustainable rotation and running dry. Same with Paralyze—if you're leveling Alteration enough to grab the perks that make it land more reliably, you're basically CCing everything that moves while you pick off what's left.

The staggers-on-hit perk (the one that triggers when you cast spells) is criminally underrated too, especially paired with something like Mayhem or a summon that's eating hits. It's not flashy but it's control.

That said, yeah—if you're on Legendary and want Alteration to feel less like a chore, don't go pure. Restoration + Alteration is the move because you get the tanking from Mage Armor plus actual healing instead of just... not dying. Conjuration works too if you want to just have your summon tank while you control the room.

What's your current setup? Like are you pure mage or are you mixing in melee at all? That changes whether Alteration feels essential or optional.
