Best mods for making Illusion actually useful in combat without going full mayhem spam?

I'm on my third playthrough (PC, SKSE ready) and I keep abandoning Illusion around level 15 because paralyze feels like the only spell that actually does anything in a fight. Fury and Frenzy are fun for like two seconds then everything just kills each other and I'm standing there bored. Is there a perk overhaul that actually makes the other Illusion spells feel viable, or am I just supposed to accept that it's a utility-only school? Playing mostly vanilla + USSEP right now but willing to add something if it fixes this.

Illusion's problem isn't really the spells themselves - it's that vanilla perks don't give you enough reason to cast anything except Paralyze or the mayhem tier stuff. The school basically bottoms out after Apprentice level.

If you're willing to grab a perk overhaul, Ordinator actually fixes this pretty well. It adds perks that make Calm, Fury, and Frenzy scale with your spell power instead of just being binary "works or doesn't," plus there's a whole branch around making your illusions last longer and hit harder. Suddenly casting Calm on a tough enemy feels like a real tactical choice instead of a waste of magicka. There's also some fun stuff with making your illusions invisible or triggering effects when enemies break them.

That said - and I might get flak for this - if you just want vanilla+ without a full overhaul, the real answer is to stop thinking of Illusion as a damage school and lean into the control angle. Paralyze is the best spell because it actually does something. Pair it with Muffle for stealth, Calm for getting out of tight spots, and maybe Invisibility for repositioning. It's not flashy but it works.

The mayhem spells being boring is fair though. They're designed to trivialize combat, not make it interesting. Most people either love them or hate them - there's no middle ground with vanilla.

What difficulty are you playing on? That might change the recommendation.

Yeah, Ordinator's solid if you want to go the mod route, but I'd push back a little on the "vanilla+ without overhaul" take. Illusion actually gets better if you stop treating it like a primary damage school and instead build around specific spell combos.

Paralyze is broken good, sure, but Mayhem spells aren't just "trivialize everything" - they're actually useful for breaking up tight groups or buying time while you reposition. The real problem is casting Fury on three bandits and then just... watching. You need something to do while they fight. That's where Illusion shines with a melee or ranged secondary. Cast Frenzy, then backstab the paralyzed one or nail them with arrows while they're distracted. Suddenly you're playing the game instead of watching it.

If you're not modding, honestly try this: grab Quiet Casting and the Illusion perks that boost duration and magnitude, then pair it with a weapon skill. Level Illusion to like 40-50 just for access to the spells you want, then stop worrying about perking it further. Use Calm to de-escalate fights you're losing, Mayhem to scatter groups, and Paralyze as your nuke. It feels way less dead than pure Illusion ever does vanilla.

What difficulty are you on though? On Adept or lower Mayhem basically breaks the game anyway, so it doesn't matter. On Legendary or Survival the spell scaling matters way more.
