Blackreach is actually a terrible dungeon and I'm tired of pretending it's good

I just spent two hours down there on my current playthrough and I'm genuinely wondering if I'm the only one who finds it tedious as hell. Like yeah, the atmosphere is cool the first time, but it's so easy to get turned around, the enemies are boring, and half the time I'm just wandering around looking for the exit because every tunnel looks the same.

The worst part is that it's mandatory for a couple of quests so you can't even skip it if you want. I get that it's supposed to be this massive underground city thing but it just feels like padding to me. Am I missing something that makes people love this place or is it just nostalgia from the first playthrough?

Nah, you're not alone. Blackreach is basically a slog the second time through, and it gets worse every playthrough after that. The "massive underground city" thing works once as spectacle, but the actual design is repetitive and the verticality doesn't help navigation - it just makes it easier to get lost. Most of the tunnels genuinely do look identical.

The enemy variety is rough too. Falmer and those glowing mushroom things aren't exactly engaging to fight, especially when you're overleveled. At least the Dwemer stuff earlier in the dungeon has some mechanical interest, but Blackreach itself? Just slog through hordes of the same enemies in the same gray tunnels.

If you're doing those quests again (Discerning the Transmundane is the big one, right?), honestly just power through it. There's no secret that makes it fun. Some dungeons in Skyrim are genuinely well-designed; Blackreach just trades on novelty. Once that wears off it's just tedium with a nice skybox.
