Block perks worth it on a sword-and-board build, or just dump into One-Handed?

Playing my first proper melee character on PS5 (level 31, Whiterun guard cosplay vibes) and I'm wondering if I should actually invest in the Block tree or if those perks are just a distraction. Right now I'm using a steel sword and shield, but I feel like I'm barely blocking anything—most hits just phase through anyway. Is there a specific perk threshold where blocking actually becomes a viable defense, or should I just pump everything into One-Handed damage and tank through it with heavy armor?

Block is genuinely worth it, but not the way you're thinking. The problem you're hitting - hits phasing through - is because the base Block skill is too low and you don't have the perks that actually make blocking do something yet.

Here's the thing: vanilla blocking is passive damage reduction. You just... block. It works, but it's boring and yeah, you'll miss blocks constantly at low skill. The perks that matter are the ones that turn blocking into active defense. There's one that lets you bash more frequently, one that staggers enemies when you block their power attacks, and one that reflects damage back. Those three change the whole playstyle from "hold shield and hope" to "actively parry threats."

Get to around 50 Block and grab those mid-tree perks and suddenly you're not just tanking - you're controlling the fight. Pair that with a shield bash build (the perk that reduces cooldown is huge) and you're genuinely viable on higher difficulties. The one-handed damage will come naturally; you don't need to dump everything into it.

On PS5 you're stuck with vanilla though, so if the blocking still feels clunky after you grab those perks, that's just... the base game. PC has mods that smooth out the animation and make blocking feel less floaty, but you don't have that option.

Yeah, that's solid advice. I'd add that at level 31 you're actually in a good spot to start feeling the difference - you're past the "blocking is useless" zone but not so high that you're trivializing everything yet.

The thing is, one-handed and block aren't really competing for your attention the way the original question frames it. You're gonna level one-handed just by swinging, but block only levels when you actually block hits, so it lags behind naturally. If you ignore the Block tree entirely, you'll end up with a level 25 Block skill at level 50 character, which means you're still missing blocks constantly and wasting perk points you could've spent elsewhere.

What I'd actually suggest: grab the perk that boosts your blocking damage (the one where bashing counts toward the skill, basically) and that mid-tier perk that staggers enemies on block - not because you need to be a "blocker build," but because they make sword-and-board feel like an actual fighting style instead of just "hold shield, swing sword." You get maybe 4-5 perks in Block total, not 20. The rest goes into One-Handed and Heavy Armor like you'd planned.

On PS5 vanilla, blocking will always feel a bit... sticky? Clunky? It's just how it is. But once you have those perks, you'll notice you're actually controlling fights instead of just surviving them. That's when it clicks.
