Blood on the Ice breaks if you talk to the wrong person first

I just got stuck on this quest and had to console command my way out, so I'm warning everyone: if you accuse the wrong suspect before the actual killer confesses, the quest softlocks. The dialogue just doesn't trigger and you're left standing there like an idiot.

I was trying to play detective, talked to the blacksmith dude about his alibi, and apparently that locked me out of the real solution path. The quest marker was still active but nobody would actually progress the dialogue. Had to reload a save from like 20 minutes earlier.

Has this always been a thing or is it a load order issue? I'm running USSEP but I thought that was supposed to fix quest-breaking bugs like this. Anyone else hit this or am I just unlucky?

Yeah, that's a known issue with that quest - it's pretty janky. I think the problem is less about talking to people and more about the order you accuse them in dialogue. The quest expects you to figure it out a specific way, and if you jump to the wrong accusation before the actual killer reveals themselves, the dialogue tree breaks because there's no response coded for that scenario.

USSEP does fix a lot of stuff but I don't think it catches everything with Blood on the Ice specifically - that quest's just weirdly brittle. Best approach on future playthroughs is to talk to everyone, gather info, but don't actually accuse anyone until you're pretty sure, or until someone straight up admits it. The blacksmith thing you mentioned - was that where you actually made the accusation, or just asked him questions? Because I think as long as you're just gathering alibis you should be fine.

Could also be a load order thing if you've got other mods that touch dialogue or quest flags, but honestly that quest is just one of the buggier ones in the base game. Reload was probably your only real option at that point.
