Just replayed it on my current run and man, it actually holds up. The whole atmosphere of Windhelm feels genuinely creepy when you're investigating a serial killer, and the twist with the killer being someone you've already met hits different than most Skyrim quests.
What gets me is how the quest actually makes you feel like a detective. You're gathering clues, interviewing suspects, and the game doesn't hold your hand about who the actual killer is. I went in blind on this playthrough and actually got it wrong the first time because I was so convinced it was someone else based on the evidence.
Also Wuunferth is such a well-written character. He's sketchy as hell and the circumstantial evidence points right at him, but there's this whole layer of "he's being framed because he's a necromancer and people already distrust him." When you realize the real killer is just some random dude who happened to be convenient, it actually says something about how quick people are to blame the outsider.
Imo it's way better than most of the hold quests and definitely better than the Winterhold stuff everyone complains about. Why does nobody bring this one up?
