Companion leaves on joining the legion?

My companion (Aela) has disappeared, and neither waiting nor fast travel as generated her re-appearance. It seems to have coincided with roughly the time I joined the Legion; is this an expected result or simply a coincidence?

I've read somewhere that Aela is prone to wandering off in the wild to hunt. Not a very good follower lol
