Dead is Dead newb

I just made my first Dead is Dead character and I'm pretty excited about it. He is a Nord around 20 years old using primary 2h, light armor, archery, smithing, secondary unperked sneak and novice restoration.

He will only use 2 spells, novice healing and transmute.

So far he's met Gerdur and made it to Whiterun and ran into the Companions, level 5.

No fast travel, carriage undecided, Dark Brotherhood undecided.

I am on master (bad idea?) with Faendal following me around. I have amassed probably 50 iron ores already and I want to head to Halted stream Camp, but that will almost definitely get Faendal killed. He's just an elf though (I'm a stormie) and I can upgrade later to a strong Nord Woman with Uthgerd as soon as I think I can take her.

I've enjoyed a few Dead is Dead builds. Be prepared to get robbed and break your own rule. You'll likely say "Oh hell no" at some point and it's ok. If I was playing Dead is Dead on my current build, I'd be done. I raised a Cultists on a pressure plate (duh) and got smacked in the face with a giant log. Not good. :)

However, it is one of my favorite modes and suits my reroller playstyle. Personally, as a walker, I think carriages should always be fair game. Doesn't mean you gotta use them all the time. It's a nice luxury once in a while and they are surprisingly scarce once you are in the middle of nowhere. You will still get plenty of walking miles. Another thing I noted as a walker is that I tend to feed Stamina so I can run as much as possible. Running a long distance seems to cause freeze ups. Loading issues I assume, so I've taken to running for a bit, stop to poke around for a few, let the game catch up, save, resume running. Seems to work, but who knows really. At the very least you have a recent save to fall back on.

I would also recommend the highest difficulty you could manage. But beware the archers. Nothing worse than a one hit death on Dead is Dead. Talk about deflating. That's when I normally drop the controller on the ground and stare at the screen dumbfounded, working out a way to justify breaking the rule. heh

I've thought about just turning off all the autosaves and only saving when I'm done, but i have this wierd issue that looks like a CTD but Skyrim is still running. Its like a "switch to desktop" and I haven't figured it out yet, but it seems to have stopped when I disabled wifi. I think it is a program trying to update itself.

Master has been easy so far, but I'm not going to let it go to my head. I've died plenty of times before at halted stream. And Krev the Skinner.

I'll be carrying a lot more potions than I ever have before. It will be a nice change to not need magica though. I'm feeling pretty pumped and optimistic.

Getting to the Lord Stone will be a scary adventure.

I'll be getting the hang of 2h on the fly the hard way, but it seems plenty beast so far. How much stamina do you think I'll need? I'll be getting windwalker as soon as possible, and I might even train light armor so I can raise it without having to get hit.

POSSIBLE SPOILER

I have found that surviving Halted Stream is much easier if you sneak to the ledge above the main cavern and then use your bow to knock down the oil lamp. The resultant fire usually kills everyone except the leader and you and Faendal should be able to take him.

I'm also trying to decide if he would use elven armor or weapons. I think IRL I would use the most effective stuff I could get my hands on, especially with him being the underdog in a rebellion. I just can't decide if he would feel the same or not.

I could easily skip elven weapons, and probably hold out for Scaled armor, especially if I join the brotherhood. The time might have come to destroy them.

I know grelod is going to die though since I feel like he is loosely related to Aventus's mother.

As far as two-handers go... this is by far my favorite, though it doesn't seem to get much love for some reason.

A two-hander that shoots a projectile that can hit multiples that doesn't require recharging... what's not to love? :)

So I think next few things on the list are talk to Kodlak, Halted Stream, visit relatives in Windhelm, and start on Agent of Mara. Maybe swing by the Lord stone

That will give me elven - tier damage, transmute, and some magic resistance before I start running into super-baddies

Good luck, I've always wanted to try a Dead means Dead, maybe I will one of these days.

Unless you plan on Restoration being really high, I would suggest you invest in some Alchemy. It can save you a lot of money as well as save your life in surprise battles. Kinda obvious, but I would also suggest that you always have a follower with you. They can distract your enemies if they're too tough. Of course, the follower would have to actually be with you, most of the time mine do this: stop, go, stop, go thing.

I might mix up some potions since I won't be using 4 magic skills and I want to get up to around level 50 for my build to feel complete.

I figure with high 2h I could also get away with making archery legendary.

I'm going to keep transmuting until around 70 for the magic resistance.

Hopefully he won't get killed :p
It feels like that movie Gamer.

Faendal didn't last 2 seconds down there at halted stream. I barely made it out, but it's just the chief left now. Retreating to Whiterun to get another attack ready.

I'm harassing the outdoor bandits with Janessa for some gear before we head back in. She already feels a lot more sturdy than Faendal was.

I am finding that Dead is Dead on master is very similar to being low level on legendary. So much time planning an being so careful that it isn't much fun

I'm trying to work out a way to speed up the game play without making it too easy.

I tried a Dead is Dead on Master difficulty once. Got destroyed by frostbite spiders in the tunnels below Helgen, before even getting to level 2.
Then I decided that it wasn't a dead is dead character after all :D

I'm up to level 12 or 13 now, but it took me around 2 days (several hours) between getting to Halted stream Camp and actually clearing it.

I might just drop it to expert.

I really liked the system in Diablo where you had to get back to your corpse to get your equipped gear back. Not realistic, but it definitely gave you a compelling reason not to die, without it being game over

Remember, you can change the difficulty even in the middle of a fight. So, your switch to Expert might be only for a few seconds

This is my favorite game I've ever played. I only just learned about Dead is Dead. I immediately started a new campaign to play in this mode. I've made a Breton on Expert difficulty. My rules are: no fast travel, only use carriages when it's a cross-continent trip. I never play with any spamming of skills, so that's not a problem. I've made it to level 13 and going strong. This is the most fun I've had playing this game. I'll keep everyone posted if I die.

I died at level 18. Killed by The Butcher when trying to get rid of the Skooma problem in Riften. But I just couldn't stand the idea of ending the game, so I made a new set of rules so I can keep playing. Sue me. I am now giving myself one death with each of the God's blessings. I died with Dibella blessing. I then died again at the hands of the Cryomancer on my way to get the Sanguine Rose, that was with Arkay. I'm now on Mara and have five more after that. I'm going FTW!

I've toyed with the idea of a dead is dead character. I couldn't decide what difficulty to play. I feel like you're going to die if you play Master+. Expert might be doable...but even that can be hinky at times.

Thoughts?

Master is really challenging for me. It's hard not to use exploits. Legendary though I'd say power leveling mandatory.
