Destruction magic falls off a cliff and nobody talks about how to fix it

I'm on my 3rd playthrough trying a pure mage build and I just hit level 35. Destruction spells feel completely useless now. Even dual-casting Fireball barely scratches anything, and I'm burning through magicka for damage that a steel dagger could do faster.

I know there's the Augmented Flames/Frost/Shock perks but those feel like they're just delaying the inevitable. By mid-game you're basically forced into Conjuration spam or Restoration healing because at least those scale somehow. Destruction just... stops working.

Are there mods that actually address this without completely overhauling the game? I'm using USSEP and SkyUI but nothing crazy. Ordinator maybe? I've heard it fixes perk trees but I'm not sure if it helps Destruction specifically. Don't want to restart if I can avoid it but also don't want to spend the next 20 hours casting pebbles at dragons.

What's the move here.

Yeah, you're hitting the wall that everyone runs into. Destruction scaling is genuinely broken in vanilla - those Augmented perks cap out at 50% bonus damage, which is pathetic when enemies have 500+ health. You're not imagining it.

Ordinator absolutely helps. It completely restructures the Destruction tree and adds perks that actually scale - things like perks that multiply damage based on your skill level, or ones that let you chain spells between targets. Way better than vanilla's flat percentage boosts. The perk that reduces casting time is also huge for DPS. It's not a complete fix on its own, but it's the foundation you want.

Beyond that though, you've got options depending on how much you want to change things. Apocalypse adds like 100+ new spells including destruction ones that actually hit hard and do interesting stuff. Wildcat or similar mods that tweak enemy scaling help too - if enemies aren't sponges, destruction feels less terrible. Some people swear by Elemental Destruction Magic or similar spell packs.

Real talk though - if you don't want to restart, you could install Ordinator right now and it should work fine mid-playthrough. Just make sure you're loading USSEP before it in your load order. You might not immediately see the new perks at level 35, but any new perks you unlock will use the Ordinator versions going forward.

The conjuration thing isn't a trap btw - dual-spec into Conjuration + Destruction is actually the intended playstyle if you want to stay pure caster without resorting to healing spam. Summons tank while you nuke.
