I never take the weapon specific perks.

I often try to roleplay realistically and I believe in a real-life situation axes are the most useful. They are extremely versatile in combat and have the benefit of being useful as a tool.

If you have the popular Dance of Death mod, you get extra kill animations with every weapon perk you add, each related to the type of perk you took. Given that I'm killing ancient dragons with 3 blows at level 40+ anyway, I'm not worried about maximizing my DPS. I take weapon perks because they look cool.

As for the 2H sword/axe thing, remember that the Ebony Blade is a 2H sword, and for someone who doesn't want to take smithing and enchanting perks, the Ebony Blade is arguably the best weapon in the game. It's certainly nice not having to worry about soul gems and healing.

Well... for the first 800 hours I was mainly swords. My current playthrough now I'm sticking to axes just to give my self variety (and not using bows at all, crowsbows are a nice change too)

i think swords are the best because they attack quicker, which may allow them 2 do more damage, and there slow mow kill cams are just crazy ass plops man

In my opinion there's just something more elegant about a sword then the other weapons. That being said I am willing to occasionally swing a single handed axe, but never a two handed one. I've also never utilized a hammer or a mace, too primitive and messy for any of my Argonian or Nord Dragonborn.

This was a tough one for me. I like 1H axes and swords both. I like the extra bleeding damage from the axes, but as someone else said, I like the look of the sword better.

A toss up IMO. I voted swords though.

Honestly, maces are my favorite. There is just something about decapitating someone with a mace. You're not slicing the head off, you are dislodging it with a slab of blunt metal

I switch around alot, I was using a steel sword, but then I switched to a dwarven axe. It all depends on my mood.

One-handed: I long favored axes, but now I <3 swords. They're faster, flashier and cooler looking, and the 3rd person animations are way more awesome. Never liked maces--just too slow for my style. (Currently, Tareth carries an ebony sword, while Eiron carries an Orchish axe and dagger.)

Two-handed: I almost never use two-handed weapons except for Civil War quests, fighting Alduin or other powerful dragons, and Drewer ruins (especially against Centurions). I tend to prefer the warhammer, but if not that then a greatsword. The battleaxe just seems clumsy to me.

As far as perks go, I'll get the baseline ones for the weapons, and maybe that perk with a chance of decapitation, because that's oh so much fun, but then I prefer to load up the armor perks so I can resist damage while slashing away at my foes. I'm Ok with a longer fight, as long as I can weather it.

Close call between axe and sword, but eventually decided to go with the axe. It just feels good to hit things with it. Not as slow as mace but still bigger damage than sword, and i personally like the CHOP! sound when axe meets flesh. That is with warrior ofcourse. Daggers are my number one weapon.

I think swords (Daggers kind of subcategory) win because of the assassins in the house. After all I do enjoy my knives...
