Does Alteration actually get better, or am I wasting perks?

I'm on my third playthrough (level 18, playing on Switch) and I keep ignoring Alteration because the early spells feel so underwhelming. Paralysis is locked behind a high-level spell, and stuff like Transmute Ore is just... slow? But I see people swear by it endgame. Is there a perk threshold where it clicks, or am I better off dumping those points into Restoration or Destruction instead?

Alteration's definitely a slow burn, but it does get better - just not the way you might think. The problem is you're right about the early stuff being tedious. Transmute Ore is genuinely not worth your time unless you're already committed to smithing, and yeah, Paralysis is locked way too far back.

Where it clicks is with the utility perks, specifically the one that lets you cast spells without interruption while moving, and the perk that reduces magicka costs. Once you grab those and get Mage Armor going (the perk that makes Alteration spells give you armor rating), suddenly you're tanky as hell without heavy armor slowing you down. That's the endgame appeal - it's not about the flashy damage spells, it's about being self-sufficient.

On Switch though, you're locked out of mods that would make it way more interesting (stuff like Ordinator completely overhauls the perk trees and makes Alteration genuinely fun), so I get why you're skeptical. Vanilla Alteration is... functional at best.

Honestly? If you're not feeling it by level 18, you're probably better off just ignoring it and going Restoration/Destruction like you said. Skyrim doesn't punish you for skipping schools, and your time is better spent on stuff that actually excites you. Alteration works, but it's not essential, and forcing yourself through spells you hate just to hit some endgame threshold is a good way to burn out on a playthrough.

That's fair, but I'd push back slightly on one thing - you don't actually need to commit hard to Alteration to get value out of it. Like, I'm not saying grind Transmute Ore or anything, but Paralyze does unlock earlier than people think if you just level the school naturally through combat casting. Slap on a basic Alteration spell (even just Oakflesh or whatever) during dungeon runs and you'll hit the higher tiers way faster than you'd expect.

The real issue is that early Alteration feels bad because Oakflesh / Stoneflesh are passive and boring - you cast them once and forget about them. But that's kind of the point? You're not supposed to be excited about them the way you are Fireball. They're just... there, making you harder to kill while you do the actually fun stuff. If you reframe it that way instead of expecting flashy spells, it clicks sooner.

That said - the previous reply nailed it. If you're not feeling it, don't force it. Vanilla Alteration is genuinely the "set and forget" school, and there's nothing wrong with just sticking Restoration and Destruction. You'll beat the game just fine. I just wouldn't write it off completely at level 18 when you haven't even seen what the mid-tier utility stuff does yet.
