Dragon fights get way easier once you stop trying to be a hero

I just realized I've been fighting dragons like an idiot for 15 years. You know that thing where you stand there trading blows while the dragon circles overhead? Yeah, that's the hard way.

Went back to an old save on my current playthrough (level 34, pure mage) and tried something stupid: I just... left. Sprinted behind a rock, let the dragon land, cast a fury spell on nearby bandits, and watched them aggro the dragon while I pelted it with frost from cover. It died in like two minutes.

The game's AI is genuinely bad at handling terrain and line-of-sight. Dragons will circle endlessly if you're in a building. They land predictably. If you're not standing in an open field waving a weapon at it, the fight becomes trivial in a completely different way than stealth archer trivial. Less "I'm broken" and more "the dragon is dumb."

Anyone else do this or am I just now discovering something everyone figured out in 2011? Because if the intended strategy is to kite dragons around landscape features and abuse their pathing, that's actually hilarious design.

Nah you're onto something real here. The dragon AI is genuinely not built to handle smart positioning - they have a few attack patterns and if you break the assumption that you're standing in an open field getting blasted, the whole fight falls apart. Your fury spell thing is honestly clever though, that's not just exploiting stupidity, that's actually using the game's systems.

The thing that gets me is how different this is from what the game presents as the intended fight. All the cinematic stuff - Alduin landing in front of you, the music swelling, you're supposed to feel like you're in this epic duel. But yeah, the second you go "actually I'm gonna stand over here behind this rock" the illusion cracks and suddenly it's just an NPC with bad pathfinding. I've done similar stuff on my mage runs where I just kite around trees and cast from range while the dragon circles uselessly overhead.

Stealth archer is broken because the game fundamentally doesn't account for sneak damage multipliers at range. This is broken in a different way - it's more that dragons are designed to be threatening when you engage them on their terms, and the game has almost no tools to force that engagement. The AI doesn't adapt, doesn't circle back aggressively if you're clearly hiding, just... keeps doing its aerial loops.

I wouldn't call it hilarious design though, more like unfinished. Draugr Deathlords are way more threatening because they'll actually pursue you into buildings and around corners. Dragons should probably do the same but they just don't.
