I don't know about you, but when I first fought Alduin, I was wearng Daedric Armor. And during the fight, he uttered the line, "Even the Daedra Fear me." Now thinking about it, the Dragons are lesser Aedra and the Aedra are significantly weaker than the Daedra because they gave up their immortality to create Mundus. So this line, to me, means one of three things:
1) Alduin is bluffing. I mean he already says he is the Firstborn of Akatosh, he is the most powerful of all Dragons, and the harbinger of the end of the world, so naturally he would be cocky.
2) Alduin is only stronger on Mundus. It is known that Daedra are much weaker on Mundus than in Oblivion. I think this have mostly to do with the pact St. Alessia made with the Divines. Dragons are essentially immortals living a mortal life on Nirn. Though they can be physically killed, because their souls are bound to Mundus, they will always return. In short, Daedra are more powerful overall, but Dragons are more powerful on Mundus.
3) Alduin was created before Lorkhan's plan to create Mundus came into effect. This would not only explain how Alduin is able to bring his fallen brothers back from the dead, how he was able to travel to and from Sovngarde so easily.
So which one do you think is the reason. Personally, I think its the second one.
