GUNS

The only problem with putting any guns in at all is the question of what happens when Bethesda does the thing with Skyrim where they skip 300 years to go into the next game?
The only logical thing to happen is for the guns to advance into modern weaponry, causing the extinction of the swords and bows that we love.

That's the great thing about fantasy worlds is the technology stays at whatever level the author wants. Apparently in fantasy worlds humans get to a certain level of technology then just give up. I mean they will design a windmill but a steam engine? That's bat sh!t crazy! :)

How about we just say that in Tamriel there is no such thing as gunpowder, so there can never be any guns EVER!!!! :D

*facepalm* This same thing happens on the Minecraft Forums all the time. You can't add modern, or early modern elements to a fantasy game. You don't see dragons in Call of Duty. You don't see guns in The Elder Scrolls. That is how it works, and that is how it should be.

Well, you can, but you have to build the world that way from the ground up like the tabletop RPG Shadowrun. Its like the lightsaber mods that are out for skyrim, its a fun novelty, but would totally ruin the environment of the game.

Skyrim is a medieval fantasy action/RPG. Even introducing things like muskets or flintlock pistols would completely change the feel of the world. Imagine how different the world was before the industrial revolution, and then after it. For those of you who are around my age (31) you remember a time when virtually nobody was on the internet, everyone didn't have a cellphone, and a tweet is what a bird said. Even small technological advances can lead to big worldwide changes.

Funny that it's not an issue for arrows.....

Even in game arrows are affected by gravity and need to be aimed correctly to compensate. In reality, arrows (and bullets) are at the mercy of gravity and the wind. You also have to lead your target in game, as arrows travel rather slowly when stacked against the speed of a lightning bolt (the speed of light.)

But the Bow and Arrow has a niche' in the world of Tamriel. It kills silently, which makes it ideal for assassins or hunters. A ball of fire or a bolt of lightning isn't exactly subtle, even with the silly "silent casting" perk.

All I'm saying is that the arrow physics could have been a little better. The drop compensation and lead time are a ways off from actuality.

TES is not Medievel. Dwemer Ruins anybody?
There are already technological advanced. I cant see a problem with guns.
Infact, I have a big idea for them:
Sorry if some thing swont make sense, copy pasted for another site I wrote it on, it's a combination of many different ''revisions'' of the idea: Guns.
Before anybody jumps on me and tells me shut the f*** up, listen:
TES is not really set in any time period, medieval or what not, so why not have guns?
They could be the newest break through technology. The guns that will be available are simple pistols, maybe Magnum-like, how ever, the game will not turn into a shooter.
The guns would have their limitations compared to the bow. They would be less powerful, MUCH more accurate *Guaranteed hit from any range, unrealistic blah blah blah, we are in a game with Dragons and magic* they would be able to shoot much faster, yet their ammo is much more rare.
They could create a new Ranger or Marksman class. With Bow/Gun. The story behind it would be that everybody is trying to get this new technology, as it could turn the tide of battle. Not all of them are exactly planning for the better, so you can decide between several factions you would help get the technology.
Actually, you just gave me a idea. In the middle of all of it, Magic users oppose this technology completely. And magnums are not flintlock pistols. Big difference there. I cant see a reason why not, it would create a new build a marksman build, that is built around ranged weapons. And it would be very interesting to play around with. I would love to blast a Dragon in the face xP
And who said the guns wont have some magical attributes? just like the reason they use bows and arrows, Magic is limited by magicka and requires a great deal of practice to master. While guns are overall more convinient. It could share some magical attributes, you know, varying magical ammunition types and enchantments.

A magnum is this: http://media.giantbomb.com/uploads/2/23286/1065500-6681s_w_629_44_magnum.jpg
I want something like that in the game *Without a scope* it would be able to hold 6 bullets at a time, but ammo is rare, meaning that is the trade off with the ammo. Along with all the stuff I listed up there.
Actually, guns would probably be more practical. Since Magic requires magicka and great training to master, while a gun you just get and shoot. But a well trained magic user will have an advantage. Meaning master vs master, Magic probably wins, medium vs medium, pretty much a tie, noob vs noob, the gun probably wins here. So it's really down to who is using it.
I can see everybody being over this new technology, while Magic users are against it, we are in the middle of all of that crap. (Addressing the concern over guns making Magic useless)
But the giveaway is it is not actually strong rounds, but rather very accurate ones.
The good points of it are it's super accurate, holds 6 bullets and can shoot faster. It is more of a on the go thing. Plus you can whip it out and use it faster.
The dis-advantages how ever are it's loud, it's weak and it takes time to reload, the ammo is rare.
Yes, they should have a skill tree. But in the end, you can MUCH more easily pick up a gun and use it than with magic. I think the gun should be pin point accurate at the highest level, guaranteed hit at any range. Without it, it would be super accurate at close-medium range, sort of accurate at long range, just more accurate than the bow. But it will also be LOUD. Meaning you will draw attention whil eusing it.

Backstory: Have a Daedric Prince of Chaos, so he drops the gun, and it is devastating, it can wipe off a army with one shot, so everybody fights for it, it falls on the Dragonborn, and you must protect it and all. He is doing it purely for his entertainment
In the end, you meet the Prince, and he trolls you by giving you a VERYYYYYYYYYY downgraded version of it. Or something like that.
But the things required to craft them would be rare *Daedra Hearts being one of them* and some of them will require a certain area on a certain time.
Who said this gun wont fire magical stuff and all? who said it must be just a 100% accurate realistic gun? I dont know about you guys, if one thing will make me happy, it's shooting a Dragon with a Daedric Gun to the face [:
TES has no time period as proven by the Dwemer. They can literally get away with anything throught them. Or hell, why not have this new Prince be somekind of expirement gone wrong with Shegorath, and he wants to restore him back.
Honestly. The game wont turn into a TPS/FPS, as the gun will be limited. It will just add more variety to the ranged category, and you could probably make a Ranger or marksman build with it, the bow and Crossbow. Again, you cant depend 100% on it, tho.
Fantasy does not really mean it must all be magic, it could be a fantasy gun.

"Guns will create new builds!"

Yeah sure, in the same way that adding books makes a librarian build, and adding food makes a cook build! Your post contradicts itself. First you say its a tech breakthrough. Then you say its a daedric lord, then you say its craftable, make up your mind.

You know this is a fantasy game. You fail to realize that, by a fantasy nature, guns are not a fitting addition. You can't put a bow and arrow into Battlefield, you can't put a gun into TES. The devs know this, and as a result, have not added any guns.

This...is my BOOMSTICK! :D

Joking and existing mod above aside (it's a Dwemer Rifle), Skyrim already has firearms that are better than primitive rifles or pistols. They're called staves and just like guns, any idiot without skills can use them.

I trimmed your post down a bit so its not a big quote block with my reply.

TES is not medieval, it's medieval fantasy. The medieval parts of it have to do with the general way the cities and culture is, the fact that most people use iron weapons, and by most people I mean the guards, the villages, the "normal people". Everything else on top of that, like lightning bolts, and dwemer ruins, are the fantasy part of it.

Dwemer ruins themselves are basically clockwork steampowered technology, which has existed in mythology on earth going back to the Greeks.

If you want to have guns, why not expand on magic and have crystal balls that people could carry that would act like videophones? Hey, its magic right? It changes the game entirely.

Actually you could put bows and arrows into Battlefield, just nobody would both using them when you can use an automatic rifle.

Want antique style guns in a Bethesda game, but still keep the magic and sword combat? Good thing they came up with Dishonored!

Dishonored
I personally am very excited for Dishonored, but guns woudn't fit TES. I spent hours working out to see if it was possible before, it wasn't. It's just not lore friendly.

Guns in fantasy work in some games. WOW for example and I thought they were fun in Fable 2. I don't see them in the TES universe tho.

In WoW all you need to do is click you will auto-attack. The chance to miss is determined by stats and percentages. In TES you actually need to aim, shoot and hope your opponent doesn't fall into the ground, then repeat.

Don't ever compare WoW to TES....so very different.

IMHO: Kalin is spot on. Why make a gun when you can easily incinerate your enemies with fire, or summon a being from another realm to massacre your foes?

If they decided to implement guns, they would be one shot at a time, and they would probably make the reload/aim times exactly the same as bows.

EDIT: Just to be clear, i'm against guns in TES because of one thing. They would not have silencers, which means they would be useless for stealth oriented characters.

I also agree with silversorcerer.

I blame Raijin for bringing images into my head of Niko Bellic and Niko Bellic-like characters running around Tamriel and it's quite honestly making my skin crawl.

That said, I understand the suggestion of a more "Steampunk" feel with Dwemer weapons. And those might be interesting. But I still find the idea generally off-putting, myself.

Disclaimer: I enjoy GTAIV. I enjoy games with guns. I do not, however, automatically enjoy the notion of blending the latter with a fantasy series such as ES.

I just can back from Army ROTC freshmen orientation at Fort Custer, so I have something to say about this comment.

In the video game world, the majority of the "guns" are super easy to use. In real life, you do need skill. You cannot run around with a rifle Call of Duty style in reality. A lot goes into it, like the right way to treat and use a rifle, the right position you should be in when standing or kneeling with the rifle, and the right way to breath so you can keep your rifle steady when aiming down your sights. Their is more I could say, but I don't want to make a large post.

I understand your talking about video games, but I feel the need to point out that weapons are not super easy to use, and that comparing magic staffs to rifles is not realistic. I mean, if I could point a stick and have it shot large fireballs at my enemies, I would never even think about using a rifle.
