I'm writing a character who's deliberately slow-traveling across Skyrim - stops in every village, talks to NPCs, takes side quests - and I want that to feel immersive, not like filler. My first draft has them hitting Riverwood, then Whiterun Hold, then finally Whiterun itself, but by chapter 3 I'm worried readers will be bored since nothing "big" has happened yet. How do you keep momentum when your character is doing a lot of small, quiet stuff? Should I be cutting some of it, or am I just not finding the actual tension in those early chapters?
