Illusion magic is way more fun when you stop trying to make it "viable

I spent like 8 playthroughs trying to build around Illusion as a serious damage option and it sucked. Then on my current run I just... stopped caring about optimization and started casting Fury and Mayhem spells at random bandit camps to watch them tear each other apart. Turns out the whole school is designed to be a chaos tool, not a damage dealer, and it's actually incredible once you stop fighting that.

Like, Invisibility and Muffle are obviously good for stealth. But the crowd control spells? Everyone sleeps on them because they don't scale with your gear and they "don't do damage." But watching a room full of enemies just start swinging at each other while you sit in the corner is way more fun than another Fireball cast. Plus they trivialize way harder encounters than they have any right to because enemies are dumb as hell.

Anyone else play Illusion as a pure chaos mage instead of trying to make it work as your main damage source? I feel like the school gets trashed because people expect it to compete with Destruction when it's actually just... a different thing entirely.

Yeah, this is exactly it. Illusion gets a bad rap because people treat it like a failed damage school when it's actually a utility/control powerhouse. The moment you stop expecting it to compete with Fireball, the whole thing clicks.

Fury and Mayhem are legitimately broken in the best way - enemies have dogplops AI pathfinding and threat assessment, so you can literally just make them fight each other while you stand there. Throw in Invisibility for repositioning and suddenly you're playing 4D chess while they're still trying to figure out which direction the last spell came from. On my current Legendary run I've had Mayhem trivialize dragon fights just by letting them maul each other.

The thing that actually bugs me is how many people sleep on the mid-tier stuff like Fury and Fear. Fury is basically a single-target Mayhem and it works on pretty much everything that isn't a boss. Fear sends enemies running and breaks their formations. These spells have actual combat applications beyond just the "lol chaos" factor, but because they don't show a damage number, everyone assumes they're trash.

Invisibility and Muffle being stealth tools is obvious, but even Calm and Pacify have their moments if you're not just trying to oneshot everything. Different playstyle entirely though - if you're used to Destruction or melee builds, Illusion feels weak because you're measuring it wrong.
