Imperials or Stormcloaks, what one?

Assertions of neutrality don't count.
The fact that I've only played either quest line once purely to experience the game content and lore and that I've been pretty explicit about the fact that I find them both uninspiring and disappointing and declined to ever do them again does count.

My arguments are about what the game content, i.e. what the lore supports and refutes. The fact of the matter is that in this thread advocates for the Stormcloaks make a lot more false assertions about the lore and game content and ignore a lot more than the advocates for the Imperial Legion and the Stormcloak advocates that are more lore and game content knowledgeable don't tend to stick around in this thread for whatever reason.

There's a notable predisposition for many of the Stormcloak advocates to put Ulfric on a pedestal that's simply too high for him to reach. He clearly isn't a white knight/white hat cowboy. He's grey and he's meant to be grey. It's what makes him interesting and it's rather disappointing that so many Stormcloak advocates don't want to acknowledge this and in doing so repeatedly take premises that have little to no merit such as that the Stormcloaks represent all Nords even though it's clearly a civil war, or that the Markarth Incident never happened, or that the segregation policy for the Dunmer in Windhelm doesn't exist or isn't racist or that Ulfric has no role in its enforcement, or that Ulfric is motivated by purely altruistic motives, or that losing Skyrim doesn't impact on the Empire's ability to oppose the Aldmeri Dominion.

There's an opposing absurdity proposed by some Imperial Legion advocates that Ulfric and the Stormcloaks are akin to Nazis but it's not stated with the same frequency as the fallacies by several Stormcloak advocates. It's also so transparently stupid and Godwin-like that I generally don't even feel compelled to address it but I have done so every now and then.

The only other claims that I tend to pick apart from Imperial Legion advocates are the notion that the Empire is in a position to rescind the White-Gold Concordat any time soon, that Skyrim is under threat of invasion from the Aldmeri Dominion if the Stormcloaks are victorious (rather easily refuted by common sense and knowledge of the geography of Tamriel) or pretty much any assertion about the status of the Aldmeri Dominion because the game and lore is extremely opaque about it.

When it comes to making assertions about the lore, Imperial Legion advocates are generally more conservative because they don't generally feel compelled to place the Empire on a pedestal. The bulk of the argument comes from ideology, i.e. which is the greater good and worse evil and that generally doesn't tend to be extremely lore dependent and is a philosophical debate. IMO it's the morally ambiguous debate intended by Bethesda as as opposed to many of the absurd debates that some of the Stormcloak advocates have engaged in throughout this thread.

TBH, I would think if you found the Stormcloak supporters in this thread to be so weak as you describe, you would want to rectify that by making the very points you believe should be made yourself.
That would be the opposite of being neutral. I'm not interested in making other people's arguments for them.
...regardless of your true feelings about things, it is hard to see you as neutral rather than merely indifferent.
As far as I'm concerned those terms are synonymous regarding my stance regarding the civil war. The practical effect is the same in that I have no interest in participating in it or arguing for the moral superiority of either cause.

(( I shall remain a skeptic. If no one makes an argument, other than to assert its existence, then I will go on assuming that a valid form of it does not really exist. ))
You just said in your prior post that you've seen Stormcloak supporters make the argument with attempted refutations that were essentially logical fallacies yet now one post later you say you're skeptical as to whether such arguments exist?

I'd be one of them then - I wear jeans much more often than anything else.

Shame.

Bet you have nice legs. ;)

Knockin' me out with those American thighs
Taking more than her share
Had me fighting for air
She told me to come but I was already there
'Cause the walls start shaking
The earth was quaking
My mind was aching
And we were making it and you
Shook me all night long, Yeah you shook me all night long

^ It's official, Docta Corvina is more desired than Lydia.

Legate Penelope is 999999999999999% more desirable than Lydia. Seriously I don't know why people are obsessed with Lydia anyways.

I rather join up with the Imperials than to marry Lydia (I did on my previous characters and I regret doing it).

*whispering*

This guy is kicking your ass Grimjulf !

Might I add in something to the pile... Lydia stop cooking me my well deserved hot meals. That's all the thanks I get from that Hagraven in disguise.

I don't know a whole lot about Tamriel's lore :( But no matter how much you read on Ulfric's actions, no one can fully understand what goes on inside his head. During the great war, his torture and etc changed him, he may still be an imperial at heart but just can't bring himself to go back because of that deceit (plus he would be executed). The White Gold Concordat happens, and Talos is "banned" blah blah blah. Many people were bitter because of that, but they still had their little shrines to Talos. Now Ulfric is hired by Igmond to take back the Reach, and at this point he is little more than a time bomb. He believes he is fighting for the good of the people, to reinstate Talos as a divine and win back the Reach. Those thoughts alone probably pushes him overboard. After that, he feels even more betrayed (I'm not sure exactly what happens) because Talos is not "legalized" and he believes the men whom he lost died under his command, and were effectively stabbed in the back by their own empire. Not to mention his encounter with the Dominion. He was most likely too shame faced to go back to them, and at this point his ambition for power begins to kick in. Like I said, lots of squandered potential... (note I just thought this up and thought it could portray Ulfric in his best light). Feedback appreciated!

"Talos the Mighty! Talos the unerring! Talos the unassailable! To you we give Praise! We are but maggots writhing in the filth of our own corruption! While you have ascended from the dung of mortality, and now walk among the stars! But you were once man! Aye! And as man you said, "Let me show you the power of Talos, Stormcrown, born of the North, where my breath is long winter. I breathe now in royalty and reshape this land which is mine. I do this for you, Red Legions, for I love you." Aye, love! Love! Even as man, great Talos cherished us. For he saw in us, in each of us, the future of Skyrim! The future of Tamriel! And there it is, friends! The ugly truth! We are the children of man! Talos is the true god of man! Ascended from flesh, to rule the realm of spirit! The very idea is inconceivable to our Elven overlords! Sharing the heavens with us? With man? Ha! They can barely tolerate our presence on earth! Today, they take away your faith. But what of tomorrow? What then? Do the elves take your homes? Your businesses? Your children? Your very lives? And what does the Empire do? Nothing! Nay, worse than nothing! The Imperial machine enforces the will of the Thalmor! Against its own people! So rise up! Rise up, children of the Empire! Rise up, Stormcloaks! Embrace the word of mighty Talos, he who is both man and Divine! For we are the children of man! And we shall inherit the heavens and earth! And we, not the Elves or their toadies, will rule Skyrim! Forever!"

That preacher does my head in. I hate Talos because of him.

Isn't it blatantly obvious whats going through the mind of Ulfric Stormcloak? He's fighting to restore the Nord heritage and their way of life. True Nords cannot simply stop worshiping Talos. Talos is in their blood. Unlike RL in the world of Nirin gods are actually real. You pray at their shrines and you will receive a form of power of a certain god that you prayed on. Ulfric didn't started hating the Empire until after the Emperor signed the treaty with the elves to ban the worship of Talos. Now you don't need to be a lore expert like Dagmar to figure out that this treaty clearly gives the elves one step forwards to control mankind. Getting tortured by the Thalmor has absolutely nothing to do with his hatred for the Empire. Go talk to Stormcloak supporting NPC's to get their side of the story. I will give you a taste of what their philosophy is by giving you a small transcript of what happen at the end of Battle for Whiterun:

Vignar: "Balgruuf!"
Balgruuf: "Vignar Gray-Mane! Your family was noticeably absent from the walls. Now I know why. Wouldn't a dagger in the back have sufficed?"
Vignar: "You think this is personal? The Empire has no place in Skyrim... not any more. And you? You have no place in Whiterun anymore."
Balgruuf: "A convenient position to hold now. But mark my words, old man, in the days to come, Ulfric will spread his rebellion thin. And what then? We need the Empire, as much as it needs us. We Nords are the Empire! Our blood built it. Our blood sustains it! You of all people should know that."
Vignar: "If this was my Empire, I'd be able to worship whoever I damned well pleased. You wish to see an Empire without Talos? Without its soul? We should be fighting those witch-elves, not bending knee to them. The Emperor is nothing more than a puppet of the Thalmor. Skyrim needs a High King who will fight for her, and Whiterun needs a Jarl who will do the same."

If you ask Galmar about the long lasting relations with the Empire he would tell you this: "Not this Empire. The world's better without it. Certainly Skyrim is. I fought in the Imperial army in the War against the Dominion. I bled and spilt blood for the Empire. And for what? The Empire to bend its knee before those evil elf bastards? Signing a treaty meant to kill the heart of the Empire itself. To deny Talos? No. I will have no part of any such Empire. And I will gladly gut anyone who says otherwise."

If you have Oblivion, In the imperial city, Talos was apart of their culture and way of life. I wonder what the Imperial city looks like now after Titus Mede II banned their very own culture to please his Elvan overlords.

Despite of Ulfrics strong hatred for the Empire it is not on his primary agenda. In fact this is what Galmar would tell you if you ask him what his aims are for the war: "First we'll kick the Thalmor and their bloody Imperial puppets out of the country. Then we'll rebuild Skyrim into the land she once was. When we are done with that, we will take our army to the Dominion, and show those pointy-eared bastards not every man is fit to be their slave." in addition: this was c/ped from Skyrim:Ulfric Stormcloak - UESPWiki Ulfric will refuse to kill the Emperor during his visit to Solitude. If you question him about this he will tell you that "We're ready to march on Solitude, but the Emperor's cousin is getting married! If royal blood was spilt, all of Cyrodiil would be up in arms. We can't afford an all out war with the Empire. So we'll bide our time for now." or he will remark that "We're ready to march on Solitude, but the Emperor's visiting! The goddamned Emperor! And, as much as I'd like to kill the man myself, we can't risk an all out war with the Empire. We'll bide our time for now..."

You hate Talos because the preacher is standing up for the rights to openly worship Talos? Hell I embrace this man.

Ulfric seems to disregard Nord way of life if it doesn't suit him.

Galmar: "The Jarls are upset. They don't all support you."
Ulfric: "Damn the Jarls."
Galmar: "They demand the Moot."
Ulfric: "And damn the Moot!"

"I wonder what the Imperial city looks like now after Titus Mede II banned their very own culture to please his Elven overlords." Titus Mede II can't ban anything, he has the power of Veto but can't dictate the terms of a treaty that involves the rest of the Empire. Elder Council handles all of that.

Talos was not only important to the Nords. He was worshiped all over the Empire, and his banning was never enforced. Not until Ulfric decided he wants High King. "That's what started this whole war. The Empire couldn't ignore that. Once the jarls start killing each other, we're back to the bad old days." That is very true, you should read about the War of succession that destroyed the First Empire of the Nords.

"People are rightly stirred up about the damn Thalmor being allowed to roam around arresting people, just for worshipping Talos. But was it worth tearing Skyrim apart, and maybe destroying the Empire? No, Ulfric will have a lot to answer for in the end."

"We didn't pay much attention to it when I was a boy - everyone still had their little shrine to Talos. But then Ulfric and his "Sons of Skyrim" started agitating about it, and sure enough the Emperor had to crack down."

Ulfric: "The Empire is weak, obsolete. Look at how far we've come and with so little. When we're done rooting out Imperial influence here at home, then we will take our war to the Aldmeri Dominion."
Rikke: "You're a damn fool."

Tullius: "You realize this is exactly what they wanted."
Galmar: "What who wanted?"
Tullius: "The Thalmor. They stirred up trouble here. Forced us to divert needed resources and throw away good soldiers quelling this rebellion."

"Stormcloaks... even the name of their rebellion stinks of Ulfric's vanity. He wants to be king. That's all this is about. One man's ambition."

"Damnit! Why can't Ulfric see he's tearing Skyrim to pieces?"

"Ulfric... what have you done my old friend?"

Both sides have their quotes.

I say most of this will depend on the options afforded to the player character if Bethesda expands on the Civil War with a dlc.

Ulfric: "A crown doesn't make a king."

What Ulfric said was nothing more than a metaphor, and shouldn't be taken seriously.

This was taken after battle of Solitude where Ulfric begins his speech.

Ulfric: "I am indeed Ulfric Stormcloak, and at my side the man/woman we know as Stormblade, and the world knows as the Dragonborn. And indeed, there are many that call us heroes. The first quote belongs to Alvor.. The uncle of Hadvar. People have the right to be stirred up over the unwelcome guest in Skyrim. It was the Empire that gave authorization through the peace treaty that brought them over here to arrest and imprison people for doing nothing more than to worship Talos. It is not Ulfric that needs to explain things, it is the Empire that needs to do a lot of explanation, and why theirs Thalmor in Skyrim slaughtering people for worshiping their god.

"Stormcloaks... even the name of their rebellion stinks of Ulfric's vanity. He wants to be king. That's all this is about. One man's ambition."

Wasn't it the Empire that named Ulfrics army "Stormcloaks" to belittle them and their cause? Ulfric didn't name this army Stormcloaks, it was the Imperials. It bit them in the ass because the army proudly calls themselves Stormcloaks. Oh whats the big deal over Ulfric wanting to become King? What about that spoiled brat Elisif? If he thinks he can restore Skyrim back then more power to him. Torygg most certainly wasn't doing his job as he was too busy indulging his queen with luxury of Imperial coin.

I rather have Ulfric as High King than that spoiled brat Elisif. I mean Take a look at these:

Attacking a neutral town, is that a metaphor also? He could of gone around it, there is no neutrality with Stormcloaks.

"But what of tomorrow? What then? Do the elves take your homes? Your businesses? Your children? Your very lives?" Only people I ever saw taking away lives, homes & businesses were the Stormcloaks.

He disregards the title of High King it because it is a great Political move, it is a show, he knows how to talk to people, that grand speech of his you love so dearly because he gives you special acknowledgement is to further his status, to oppose Ulfric is to oppose the great Dragonborn. His Stormcloak Militia completely loyal to him are in many Towns. His army is of loyal fanatics willing to die for him. I simply love the reasons many Stormcloaks are fighting. You listen at their camps... "I'm a true nord simple as is"

Tullius continued on with the war knowing what the Thalmor wanted? He needed to continue, Ulfric would not stop until he was dead. In the end Ulfric only cares for song and being remembered. Let's push out all Imperial influence in Skyrim? Yeah okay lets push out the people who feed our people, give money and trade. You think Hammerfell will be nice to Skyrim? They'd probably invade than trade. High Rock? Imperial controlled.

You have to look past the Talos ban, it effected every part of the Empire. The Empire saved thousands by ending the war to rebuild. Thalmor puppets the Empire are? Funny I don't see a Thalmor dossier saying Tullius is a thalmor asset. I did see a Thalmor dossier on Ulfric, I did see Thalmor at the execution trying to stop it so Ulfric can live. I don't see any books showing the Empire slaughtering people because they are neutral. I did see Tullius' first order when the dragon attacked "Get the towns people to safety"

For the Empire I don't see racism, racial segregation nor do I see only Imperial legionnaires. Tullius is a warmonger? I don't see him burning two cities.

Considering many pro Empire worship Talos still shows the Empire hasn't let Talos go, they're just not screaming it aloud because thousands died to end that war, just because the Empire didn't want thousands more to die doesn't make them bad. Live to fight another day.

The cause of the Stormcloaks isn't bad, it is a great cause. Just not now, not when war with the Thalmor is looming ahead. It isn't the time to become divided. The way Ulfric went about it just isn't right.

Jarl Elisif is my High Queen any day ;)

Ulfric did not attack the town without a reason to do it. Ulfric gave Balgruuf a chance to finally pick sides, and he picked the Empire therefor he is no longer neutral.

Oh really? I never recalled anyone complaining how the Stormcloaks murdered their entire families while on the other hand Angi could tell you all about how the Imperials killed her entire family because they thought they were above the law. Perhaps I missed out on something that you happen to cough on. Give me an NPC, and I'll go off and get their side of the story myself :)

While it may of been a political stunt he still abide by Nordic traditions by waiting until the moot gives him the title.

I bet Tullius mistress, Elenwen, is quite thrilled to see that hes doing exactly what she wants him to do... to continue on wasting much resources so they can continue to be weak, and unable to successfully defeat the Thalmor. After all she has him on a tight leash. And how do you know Ulfric would not stop? I did not see Tullius trying to build up an allegation towards the Stormcloak to take the war to the Thalmor base on the information that he has against them. All Ulfric wants is Skyrims independence, thats all. Nords should be allowed to rule their own country. LOL Are you still going on about the song and remembrance? Granted Ulfric is egoistical... But I do not hold it against him.

According to Nura Snow-Shod of Riften : A devout Nord would rather fall in battle and have his blood spill Upton the earth then allow the Empire to strike his name (Talos) from the divinity. While the Imperials are quite known for their quick surrendering the Nords play a whole different deck of cards. They rather die and go to Sovngarde then to surrender and have their gods taken from them, so no. The Empire did not save thousands. He created a lot of hatred against his own people for banning the worship of Talos. He became so hated that someone (I assume a member of the elder counsel) hired the Dark Brother to take him out. The text in bold is pure speculation, nothing more. I've gone through the voice files on both General Tullius and Elenwen, and nowhere did I hear anything about letting Ulfric live... In fact Tullius was quite edger to execute Ulfric.

For the Empire I don't see racism, racial segregation nor do I see only Imperial legionnaires. Tullius is a warmonger? I don't see him burning two cities.

It's the way of war. Unfortunately burning cities is part of it, and Tullius isn't all that innocent either as he burnt Windhelm if you side with the Imperials. Also Ulfric doesn't order your execution for no reason. Name not being on the list? You get executed anyways. If you steal a horse.... To the headmens axe you go. And by Talos don't even try to bring up the captain bitch as it was Tullius that ordered for your execution base on the dialogue with Hadvar outside the cave.

Considering many pro Empire worship Talos still shows the Empire hasn't let Talos go, they're just not screaming it aloud because thousands died to end that war, just because the Empire didn't want thousands more to die doesn't make them bad. Live to fight another day.

That is true, but why do you need to worship Talos in total secret? especially on your own land? Why should the Thalmor dictate who people should and should not worship? If the Empire is afraid to confront the Thalmor, even after 25 years, then you know what? The Empire has no business ruling Tamriel.

The cause of the Stormcloaks isn't bad, it is a great cause. Just not now, not when war with the Thalmor is looming ahead. It isn't the time to become divided. The way Ulfric went about it just isn't right.

The way Galmar goes on about killing everyone who doesn't support them, I have little doubt that he would gladly carry out a Stalin-like purge of Skyrim shortly after the war.

While it may of been a political stunt he still abide by Nordic traditions by waiting until the moot gives him the title.

Of course if you side with him and win the war then all of the opposing Jarls are conveniently replaced.

Going back to one of my previous arguments, although Ulfric has a noble idea, he's the wrong man, and it's the wrong time. Splitting the empire up only serves the interests of the Thalmor. It allows them to conquer the world one chunk at a time. Just because Hammerfell has been able to stand it doesn't mean that Cyrodil can without the aid of the Nords, thus you're condemning a lot of innocents to potential Elven domination, as well as potentially putting the Dominion in a much better position to attack Skyrim from.

Again, it's a noble Ideal, and I can see why many would support it, but in the end, it would only be a short-term victory for the Sotrmcloaks, followed by a very bleak outlook for the long-run.

Holy Talos! Shes hot! Too bad her character ,Elisif, is a whiny little brat with entitlement issues.

Ulfric attacked Whiterun because he could. He killed High King Torygg to send a message to the other Jarls. Until the Moot gives him the title? He rules the Moot now, there is no decision.

The Empire had to consider more than just Nords. It is easier for Nords because they do not care if they live or die. They go to their after life by dying with honor and in Nordic ways honor and glory are in battle. Nords would be fine with the other races being enslaved and tortured if it meant they could keep fighting to die in battle, they simply do not care if they die in battle, they want to die in battle. They would be fine with the destruction of the race of men if it meant they'd die in battle.

As long as the civil war proceeds in its current indecisive fashion, we should remain hands-off. The incident at Helgen is an example where an exception had to be made - obviously Ulfric's death would have dramatically increased the chance of an Imperial victory and thus harmed our overall position in Skyrim.

The execution was just you in the wrong place at the wrong time. As you said it is the way of war, things happen.

I don't believe the Thalmor are right, but the Empire is preparing for war, it takes time to rebuild. At least two Legions were wiped out, no other Legion had half strength, the Navy would be damaged after the Naval battle on the Lake. Cities are damaged and need repairing. The Imperial City itself was badly damaged and ruined after Aldmeri occupation. Then Ulfric starts his crap, so yeah it delays the Empire. The fact the Imperial army is currently tied down on the Aldmeri Dominion border shows they are nearly ready. Why else would the Thalmor start trouble now.
