Imperious - Races of Skyrim still holds up better than any race mod since

I was going through my old mod list from like 2018 and decided to reinstall Imperious just to see if it aged well, and honestly? It's still leagues ahead of anything that's come out in the past few years. The racial bonuses actually feel like they matter without breaking the game, and the way it ties everything back to lore instead of just raw stat padding is chef's kiss.

What gets me is how many race mods since then have either gone too hard on the power fantasy or just felt like they were adding bloat. Imperious does this thing where a Breton actually feels like a Breton - you get the magic resistance and the Dragonskin ability, sure, but it's the little stuff like the Shackle-Breaker power that makes you feel like you're playing that race's story, not just a human with a different face.

Anyway, if you're on your nth playthrough and the vanilla racial traits feel boring, I'd honestly say give this one another shot. It's not flashy, but it's solid roleplay fuel and it doesn't require a dozen compatibility patches to not break everything.

Imperious is genuinely good, yeah. EnaiSiaion just gets what makes a race feel distinct without turning it into a power creep arms race. The Breton example you mentioned - that magic resistance combined with Dragonskin actually plays out different from just "you take 25% less magic damage" because you have to think about when to use the power, whereas vanilla you just get a passive buff and move on.

That said, I'd push back a little on "nothing since holds up better." Orsimer Strongholds (or whatever the current orc overhaul is called - not sure of the exact name) does some really interesting stuff with the stronghold mechanics that Imperious doesn't touch, and if you're doing a roleplay-heavy run that's huge. And there's been some solid race mods that lean into the lore angle too, they're just less flashy so they don't get talked about as much.

The bloat thing though, yeah, I see that constantly. People adding like 15 new powers per race or tying racial bonuses to quest lines that feel bolted-on. Imperious keeps it tight - you get maybe 2-3 meaningful tools per race and that's it. Makes actual character building choices matter instead of just stacking whatever's strongest.

Only real caveat is it doesn't play super nice with some of the perk overhauls if you're running Ordinator or Vokrii, but nothing that needs patches - just minor overlap on what certain powers do. Still worth it though.
