Maturity of forum

I am struck by the relatively polite nature of these forums, compared with some of the others. I wonder if this series of games attracts a different group of people (age, background, attitude etc) than many others.

So, to kick off: I have been playing and writing computer games since the late seventies, my first love was Wizardry on the Apple II and I also found the Myst series to be outstanding. Skyrim seems to combine the best of both of these for me.

29 y.o. maths teacher here, married with kids. Ive been playing games since i got mario bros on my NES.

I image that the type of 'player' skyrim attracts is far different from say.... COD.

I think the game itself does attract a certain type of play, absolutely. I also think that the members here foster the atmosphere and directly influence the continual contribution of excellent content. I had the displeasure of reading through another Skyrim forum for mod information and there was a much higher population of outright jerks. I don't understand the point of a forum where people have a sincere question, post it and then get bashed for doing so. I'm fairly certain none of us were born knowing how to use forums or how to play Skyrim. The membership here is very good at steering people in the right direction without being jackwagons for the most part. Obviously, we have an occasional slip. But overall, people want an excellent source for content and conversation and they've made it here.

I don't know. Maybe you have just been lucky, because i've seen some internet ruffians up to some shenanigans for sure! I am happy to see some old school gamers posting.

My first love was Ultima IV on the C64. I thought with things such as seemingly pre- determined critical kills, perks, quest markers- the whole automation and ease in Skyrim would set me off ( being from the old school) , but it hasn't. At all. I love this game! But, i am expecting my "games were better before automapping! " old-man gamer attitude to kick in any day now.

Loved the Old C64. The first RPG type game I can remember really getting into was Champions of Krynn on the PC (old CGA graphics, kids these days would laugh but back then it was great just to have colour on a PC)

It can't be possible....Commodore 64 mentioned TWICE in the SAME thread**slaps own face***and I thought I was the only one. Loading games from a cassette was insane, wow that takes me back. I can do one better even, an old friend of mine had a TSR 80. Oops off topic.

I am old. Very, very old, my original gaming was pen and paper Dungeons & Dragons.. then I was given a Sinclair ZX Spectrum (hopeless) but carried on building paladins and hobbit thieves.
I'm brand new to computer gaming really, I had a PS2 but it was unsophisticated Tekken button bashing. The Xbox and PS3 thing is very new to me.
To anyone in the know, did TSR release a DnD game, or one like it?

I'm not positive but I don't think the TSR had a DnD game or my friend would most surely of had it. As for the maturity of the forum, most of the credit goes to the mods and admin for setting the tone. The eye-catching layout doesn't hurt either. FEELS user friendly and I think that goes along way.

I am really curious as to why this site is so mature compared to other forums. Perhaps because of the lack of anonymity? You give away positive and negative feedback without being anonymous and you can socialize here easily. It's rather interesting.

I totally agree with you the consept of this is really working like it should i havnt seen many issues on here.However i am worried that it will die out with the popularity of the game , that will make me sad great group that has been brought together ........

I don't think this forum will become less mature over time. I've been here for a while and the overall atmosphere of the community hasn't changed. I assume Nexus and official Skyrim forums absorb all the trolls and kids for us. ahahaha. Probably not but that's my theory.

I play games since the 80s, one of my favorite RPGs was the Eye of the Beholder I, II and III, I used to play them on the Commodore Amiga, then Daggerfall came...the rest is history

I really don't think luck has anything to do with it. If Renegader just tossed the site up then sat back and did nothing more, I might believe more in the 'luck' theory. He has not just sat back to see how it would evolve. He's continued to pay attention and be responsive to the membership. I think that goes a long way toward the cohesiveness of the membership as a whole. I think the membership feels that the administration here is accessible and genuinely interested in what they have to say (positive and negative).

I also believe that many of our anchor members, those who post frequently and engage with everyone in the shoutbox (including interacting with guests to the site) are perceived as actual human beings with personalities as opposed to a smattering of pixels. It is easy to be a jerk to a bunch of pixels.

Same age here and a very similar background, started off playing rpgs with dice and pencil usually runequest or palladium, also had the spectrum. I got my ps3 as a xmas present and skyrim kind of appealed, it is the only game I have played on it so far.
