Missing Stone of Barenziah

The stone in Wunfeert's alchemy lab (whatever his name is) is missing. I play on console so I won't be able to spawn one. Perhaps, its because he got sent to jail for supposedly killing the woman in windhelm. I had to investigate the murder for a quest and happened to be him.
 
You sure it's not there? When you're investigating that's the time that you're supposed to find it. The table with the antlers I think?
 
are you sure you didn't already pick it up?

That's one thing I wish they'd have done was to ID each stone some how with where you got it so you could keep track better. LOL.
