MO2 vs Vortex in 2026—has anything actually changed or are we still having the same argument

Been modding since like 2017 and every time I lurk these forums someone's asking which manager to use and the answers are always the same. MO2 is "better" if you know what you're doing, Vortex is "easier" for new people. But honestly I'm wondering if that's still true or if Vortex has actually caught up in the last few years.

I've been on MO2 forever and I'm not switching, but I'm genuinely curious if anyone's made the jump recently and what changed their mind. Like, is Vortex's mod installation actually smooth now without the weird dependency hiccups? Does it handle SKSE stuff better than it used to? I know MO2's still the gold standard for people who are comfortable with virtual folders and load order tweaking, but I feel like I'm just repeating what I read in 2019 at this point.

Also asking because I'm helping someone new get their first modlist together and I don't want to throw them straight into MO2 if Vortex legitimately works fine now. Don't want to gatekeep them into unnecessary complexity if the gap's actually closed.

I've stuck with MO2 since like 2018 so I'm probably biased, but I think the gap's actually gotten bigger, not smaller. Vortex still has that fundamental issue where it installs directly into your game folder, which means you're always one bad mod away from needing to verify files or deal with conflicts that are way harder to isolate. MO2's virtual folder system just lets you nuke a mod and know it's actually gone.

That said, if your friend is completely new and just wants to slap together like 30-40 mods without getting into heavy load order manipulation, Vortex probably works fine. It's more forgiving about dependency stuff than it used to be. But the second they want to do anything more involved - testing load orders, using LOOT properly, dealing with plugin conflicts - they'll hit a ceiling pretty fast.

Honestly for a beginner I'd just bite the bullet and teach them MO2. Yeah there's a learning curve, but it's not that steep if you spend 20 minutes explaining what the left and right panes do and why separating mods matters. They'll thank you later when they're not rebuilding their install every other week.
