Morrowind's magic system actually punishes you for not planning ahead—how do I stop wasting spells?

Coming from Skyrim where you just cast whatever, I'm getting destroyed in Morrowind because my spell costs are insane and I run out of magicka constantly. I'm level 12, mostly using Destruction and Restoration, but even a basic fireball drains like half my pool. Are there perks or items I should be hunting for, or am I just supposed to manage my spell list way more carefully than I'm doing? Also—is it actually worth making custom spells early on or should I stick with the premade ones until I understand the system better?

Wait, you're playing Morrowind but asking on the Skyrim subforum? Anyway—magicka management in Morrowind is genuinely a different beast. You're not wasting spells, the system just expects you to build around it from character creation.

At level 12 with half your magicka gone per fireball, you've probably got low Magicka and low Destruction skill. Both matter way more than in Skyrim. Your spell costs scale with your skill level—a master Destruction mage casts the same spell for like 1/3 the cost you're paying. So yeah, you need to either grind the skill (cast weak spells repeatedly) or respec if you're early enough.

For immediate relief: grab items that boost Magicka or reduce spell costs. Robes with Fortify Magicka enchantments exist everywhere. The Mage's Guild sells them. Also—and this is huge—Morrowind lets you meditate to restore magicka if you have the right spell or item. You're not stuck like in Skyrim where you chug potions or sleep.

On custom spells: stick with premades until your skill is like 50+. Custom spells cost way more to cast early on because the game calculates based on your current skill. Once you understand the math, custom spells become broken-good, but right now you'd just drain yourself faster.

What race and birthsign did you pick? Some combinations are way better for mages than others. If you grabbed Apprentice Stone without planning for it, that's part of your problem.
