Planning a Character

I'm trying to plan out a character. Even with a skill system as free as Skyrim's I still find myself restarting constantly because I made a bad perk choice. I prefer up close combat, so most of my perks would be in the combat specialization.

So far the only two skills I got set in stone are one-handed and block. I like wading into battle. Here are my questions and concerns:

Which is better for fighting flying dragons, destruction or archery? I figured I need one, though I only plan on using it to bring down dragons. My experience tells me that soloing against a dragon is impossible without some form of ranged option to bring them down to earth (shouts don't seem to work). I should also note that I'm against having companions, they tend to get in my way.

If I chose archery, should I chose light armor? I prefer tanking, and don't like stealth, but light armor seems to lend itself well to archery. Aren't they both the same in the long run anyway?

Which races are best based solely on powers? I usually go orc because I like the look of them and their racial power saved me many times when up against tough enemies. Based on my play style though, which race would work better?

I usually stick with the steed stone since I lean towards heavy armor, but that might not be useful if light is better. Increases in skill ups don't concern me too much. Any suggestions otherwise?

I may have other questions later. I apologize if this is all kinda noobish, but I AM a noob, so there.

Hmm, based on your play style I'd say go Nord or Orc. Both are good Warrior races. Orcs berserk skill is beast. Now, I usually use a bow to bring down dragons. I've tried getting them down with magic but they have to be relatively close. With a bow you can hit them from long range without exposing yourself too much. Im not too sure about heavy armor/ light armor. It's really your preference since you won't be using your bow all the time. Might be nice to carry a Light armor set with you though for when you encounter a dragon. You will want to be light on your feet while running from it's breathe and getting into position to shoot it down, then switching to heavy to finish it off.

I play on Master difficulty and use no ranged attacks whatsoever. I move around and force the dragon to land based on my position and the enviroment. It's easier to do than you would first think. Obviously once you get Dragon Rend forcing dragons to land is easier. I personally would not waste perks specifically to take down one kind of creature.

Archery seems to work a lot better with Stealth (as the added damage bonus is it's main attraction). Sure you could get stealthy with Heavy Armour, but taking Light Armour would allow you to do this pretty much from the start.

Easy - Breton for their MR. This really depends on what difficulty you plan to play on though. If you play on Adept or below it doesn't really matter what you choose. Orc's is a good one to have, but 1 minute a day. I went with Nord, mainly because I made a cool looking chap and didn't want to go with anything else. 50% Frost Resistance is pretty meaty when combined with my other Magic Resistances that I have stacked.

I went with The Lord. 50 points of damage resistance and 25% MR. Another biggey for Master difficulty (you may see a pattern with this now) Once you get Conditioning from the Heavy Armour tree, The Steed stone isn't as useful.

Hope it is of some help.

I kinda agree with the point about using bows against one creature. I've been avoiding the main quest for the most part, so I haven't gotten dragon rend. I'll post another thread asking about help with dragon tactics.

The main reason I chose the steed stone is that the left half of the heavy armor perk tree seems useless up to conditioning. I don't fight with my fist (and brawls aren't hard or frequent enough to warrent taking a perk) and I rarely fall.

I also wanted to take up ALL the crafting skills. So the fewer skill trees I focus on the better.
