So I'm replaying Dragonborn for the first time in years and I just realized how genuinely bizarre the Rieklings are in the context of the rest of the DLC. Like, you've got this whole island that's basically a collision between Dunmer culture, Daedric influence, and Nordic settlement, and then there's just... these little goblin things running around stealing your stuff and living in caves.
They show up in like two quests (the one where you clear out the camp for the Skaal, and I think there's a radiant job or two) and then they're just kind of background noise. But the lore doesn't really explain where they came from or why they're specifically on Solstheim. Are they native? Did they migrate? The Pocket Guide doesn't help much either from what I remember.
What gets me is that they feel tonally disconnected from everything else. Solstheim is this oppressive, atmospheric place where you're dealing with Miraak's influence and Hermaeus Mora's reality-warping nonsense, and then you turn a corner and there's just a tiny goblin trying to steal your iron dagger. It's almost comedic in how jarring it is.
Am I overthinking this or does anyone else feel like the Rieklings needed more development? Like, what if they were actually more central to the Skaal questline instead of just being random bandits?
