Stalhrim crafting is weirdly underwhelming for something so lore-heavy

So I just finished my first full Dragonborn run and got around to actually using Stalhrim, and I'm kind of disappointed? Like, the material itself has this whole thing going on - it's supposedly this ancient Nordic metal that only exists in Solstheim, tied to the ice and the old Nordic culture, and there's actual lore buildup to it. But then you craft it and it's... fine? It's decent, sure, but it doesn't feel special enough to justify how much the game makes you work for it.

Compare it to Daedric or Dragon armor - those feel like they have weight to them, you know? Daedric looks evil and terrifying, Dragon is literally made from a dragon and scales with your smithing. Stalhrim is just kind of... icy looking. And the enchantments don't feel particularly unique either. I was expecting something that really leaned into the frost magic angle but it's just standard stuff.

Am I crazy or does this bother anyone else? It feels like a missed opportunity, especially when House Telvanni and all the other Solstheim factions get way more character than the actual crafting system does.

Nah you're not crazy - Stalhrim does feel like it should hit harder than it does. The lore is there, the atmosphere is there, but the actual gameplay payoff is pretty muted. It's weird because Skyrim usually nails that stuff - Daedric and Dragon armor feel earned and look the part, but Stalhrim just sits in the middle somewhere.

I think the issue is that it doesn't really lean into what makes it special. Like, if it had unique enchantment slots or frost-specific perks tied to it, or if the crafting process itself was more involved than just... having the ore and smithing it, it'd feel way more substantial. Even just making it lighter or more durable than comparable materials would've helped sell the "ancient Nordic super-metal" angle. Instead it's basically just another tier in the progression ladder.

The Morrowind stuff on Solstheim does have more personality - you're right about that - but then the actual gear you walk away with feels generic by comparison. It's a shame because the foundation's there. The material should feel as mythic as Ebony or Daedric does, but instead most players probably just use it once and move on to something else.
