Stealth archer is actually broken and we should talk about why

I'm on my 5th playthrough and finally sat down to actually math out why stealth archer trivializes everything past level 15. It's not just "lol stealth op" - there's something genuinely wrong with how the perks stack.

The issue is that Steady Hand and the archery crit multiplier perks basically let you one-shot anything that doesn't have ridiculous armor scaling. But the real problem? Invisibility potions are absurdly cheap to make, the Invisibility spell costs almost nothing after you grab a couple Illusion perks, and enemies have zero way to counter it once you're hidden. You can literally just... stand in front of a dragon and fire arrows into its face while it sits there confused.

Compare that to a melee build where you have to actually manage positioning, stamina, and enemy aggression. Or a mage build that has to worry about magicka sustain and enemy resistances. Stealth archer has none of those problems. You press Invisibility, you're unkillable. Full stop.

The worst part is I can't even call it a "playstyle preference" thing anymore because it's objectively easier than every other approach. I've done pure melee on Legendary and it's harder than stealth archer on Legendary, and that feels backwards.

Anyone else notice this or am I just burnt out on the build at this point?

Yeah, you're not wrong that stealth archer is mechanically overtuned, but I think you're underselling how much of this is about Skyrim's AI being fundamentally bad at handling stealth rather than archery itself being broken.

Like, the real issue isn't the crit multiplier or Steady Hand - those perks are fine. It's that once you break line of sight, enemies just... give up. They'll stand around confused for 30 seconds while you reposit and shoot them again. A melee character has to deal with the same enemies, but at least they're forced into actual combat. Stealth just lets you opt out of the game's systems entirely.

And yeah, invisibility potions and the spell are absurdly efficient, but that's almost a separate problem from archery being OP. You could slap invisibility on any build and trivialize things. The fact that archery + invisibility stacks so cleanly is the real culprit. A pure archer without stealth abuse is still strong, but it's not "stand in front of a dragon" strong.

The melee vs mage comparison is fair though. Melee has to manage stamina and positioning, mages have to manage magicka and resistances, but a stealth archer just... doesn't engage with any of those systems. You're not wrong that it feels backwards on higher difficulties.

That said, I'd argue this is more of an AI / game design flaw than an archery balance issue. On modded playthroughs with something like Requiem or even just better enemy AI mods, stealth archer stops being completely braindead because enemies actually search properly and have countermeasures. Suddenly you have to think about wind direction, positioning, and whether you can actually pull off the shot before they find you.

Are you planning to mod it out or just swap builds?
