Honestly, I think your avatar might affect people's views of you a bit. It's kinda hard not to respond because, assuming it depicts you, you have huge and very friendly looking smile. Does that mean you'd get more "likes" from me? I don't know. But I do know that if you said something that might be taken the wrong way, that might seem like it was a bit insulting or whatever, I'd almost certainly give you the benefit of the doubt because.... you don't look mean.
Compare that to the peeps with death's heads and shrouded skulls as avatars. They might have to work a bit harder in order to display such goodwill.
Either way, the effect is probably very minimal. Nothing to worry about.
In any case, I don't think you should let anyone make you self conscious about your avatar. There's nothing wrong with it at all.
Fair point well made, Moris. I could see my avatar having that affect. I think those types of perceptions are unavoidable though, as someone will almost always make a skin-deep judgement of "who you are" based on what you use to represent yourself. An avatar is basically a virtual first impression. I don't mind people thinking I'm friendly based on my photo, I would just hope that if someone found me to be attractive, it wouldn't affect their ratings on my posts.
