The Forsworn Conspiracy is still the best quest in the game

I just replayed it for the first time in years and honestly it holds up better than anything else Skyrim throws at you. The setup is perfect - you get arrested for a crime you didn't commit, thrown in a cell with someone who actually knows what's going on, and then everything unfolds from there. No radiant markers telling you where to go. No compass waypoint. You have to actually listen to Madanach and piece together what happened.

What gets me is how the quest treats you like you're not the Dragonborn. You're just some prisoner who got caught in the wrong place. The guards don't care that you've slain dragons. The Forsworn don't care. You're down there with everyone else and the only way out is to play along or fight your way through. There's real consequences too - if you side with the Forsworn, half the hold turns hostile. If you betray them, Madanach swears a blood oath against you and actually shows up later to make good on it.

The environmental storytelling in Cidhna Mine is insane too. You learn about the Forsworn through the people trapped down there, not through exposition dumps. The quest respects your intelligence enough to let you figure out the politics yourself.

I think what makes it work is that it's small. It doesn't try to be the main story. It's just a really tight, self-contained questline with actual stakes and multiple ways to play it. No Daedric princes, no world-ending threats, just people with real motivations trying to survive in a terrible situation.

Yeah, this quest nails something a lot of Skyrim's bigger stuff misses - it actually makes you feel trapped and powerless for once. The fact that you can't just Fus Ro Dah your way out of the mine is huge. You're forced to engage with the politics instead of just steamrolling through combat.

That said, I think the "no compass waypoint" thing gets a little overstated. The quest still marks locations on your map once Madanach tells you where to go - you're not actually wandering blind. But yeah, it's way more immersive than "follow the arrow to the glowing objective." And the environmental clues in the mine itself are genuinely well done. You pick up on the Forsworn's grievances just by reading the notes lying around and overhearing conversations.

My one gripe is that the quest kind of falls apart after you leave the mine, depending on your choice. If you side with the Forsworn, Madanach does technically come after you later, but it's usually just one encounter and then he's gone. Would've been cooler if siding with him actually had longer-term consequences - like Forsworn attacks following you around, or the Markarth guards being permanently suspicious. Instead it just... ends. Still solid though. Probably top 5 for sure.
