The Greybeards never actually teach you anything and it's brilliant

I just realized on my third playthrough that the Greybeards are completely useless for learning shouts. You don't get a single new shout from them. Arngeir just lectures you about the Way of the Voice, Esbern has his own agenda, and Paarthurnax is the only one who actually does anything, but he's not even technically a Greybeard.

And I think that's kind of the point? They're not there to power you up. They're a roadblock. A moral filter. The whole questline is about whether you're going to respect their philosophy or just use them as a stepping stone to get what you want. Most players probably don't even notice because you're too busy getting the Elder Scroll and dealing with the Alduin stuff, but the Greybeards are basically asking you to slow down and think about power itself.

Compare that to every other faction where you're accumulating perks and gear and status. With the Greybeards you get... told to meditate. You get sent on errands. You get lectured about restraint by people who haven't left a mountain in centuries. It's almost antagonistic to the player's usual goals, which I think is exactly what makes it work.

Anyway, has anyone else noticed they barely give you anything tangible, or does everyone just speedrun past them to get to Paarthurnax?

I think you're onto something, but I'd push back a little on the "useless" framing. They do give you shouts - just not new ones. You learn Unrelenting Force from them right at the start, and later they teach you how to unlock shout words you've already found. That's not nothing, especially early game when you're still figuring out how the shout system works.

But yeah, the broader point stands. They're not a power fantasy faction. The questline isn't rewarding you for completing tasks - it's testing whether you'll sit through their philosophy without immediately bailing to go fight dragons. And honestly, that makes them way more interesting than if they just handed you a Daedric artifact or made you Archmage or whatever.

What gets me is that Paarthurnax actually does break that mold. He teaches you shouts, he's useful, he's charismatic - and then the game forces you into this awful moral calculus where the Blades demand you kill him. It's the only real conflict the entire questline has, and it works because by that point you've spent hours listening to the Greybeards talk about restraint and the Way of the Voice, so killing Paarthurnax actually means something. If they'd been useful and rewarding the whole time, that choice wouldn't hit the same.

Most players probably do speedrun past them though, which is kind of a shame.
