The Jagged Crown Dilemma

Kohlar the Unkilled

Time for some ale
My apocalyptic Argonian joined the stormcloaks, mainly because I've not played that side yet. Yet now I find myself unable to part with the Jagged Crown. It didn't fit Kohlar well, so I had no problem with giving it up when playing the quest as him. But it's the only helmet that looks good on an Argonian. Infact, it looks very right indeed. So, what is to be done... the power of the crown compels me. Perhaps I should just attack Ulfric rather than give it up. Once I'm powerful enough, I intend to lay waste to all of Skyrim anyway, and giving up the crown now will not aid me in that eventuality. No, I believe the apocalyptic Argonian was meant to inherit this crown, which was worn by great Kings of the past. Any thoughts?

There is a way to keep it and still complete the Civil War questline... Before leaving Korvanjund with the Crown, reverse-pickpocket it onto Ralof. Once you have completed the quest, you can pickpocket it back from Ralof. Even though its a quest item it still works for some reason...

As long as your apocalyptic argonian has no issues with pickpocketing, your problem is no more :)

Splendid! He has no problem at all with thievery in general.

Alas, I left Korvanjund a while back. I wonder if Ralof is still in there... Or even if he did return to Windhelm, perhaps this could still be done.

No Ralof, he's still in there. Probably hasn't found the exit yet. Like all Nords, he could get lost in a paper back and just starve to death before figuring out that he could just hack through it. :)

I could not locate Ralof. I wonder if he actually starved to death in a paper bag... I suppose the trick doesn't work with Galmar Stone-Fist? He was the only named Stormcloak that I saw in Korvanjund.

Did you check Riverwood? I've found Ralof hanging around during and after the war many times near his sister's house or the Sleeping Giant.

I recall that the famous Cyrodilic scholar Stronach k'Thojj III once stated in one of his epic works:

"finders keepers, losers weepers"

On second thought, that might not have been a k'Thojj quote. May have been the fortune cookie I got with my General Tso's on Saturday. Oh well, wisdom is wisdom.

In order for the Jagged Crown trick to work, you must join the side you left Helgen with. So if you leave Helgen with the Imperials, you must join the Imperials for the Civil War quest and vice versa. That's the only way to meet your pickpocket target in Riverwood.

Got me into thinking... What if one follow Ralof, side with the Imperials and then 'hand' the crown for Ulfric? Would the drop-pocket trick still work?

No, because you need to establish a relationship with your pickpocket target in Helgen. If you leave with Ralof and then side with the Imperials, you won't have anybody to reverse pickpocket it onto during the Jagged Crown quest. Ever notice that sometimes someone meets you when you arrive at the tomb, but sometimes not? That's because if you join the opposite side than who you escaped with, the person you escaped with will be an enemy. You only have the necessary ties if you are consistent in your allegiance.

Not to say there isn't some kind of workaround possible, I just don't know of any. It's actually a pretty small window in which to pull it off based on my experiments and experience.

For this character's storyline, tis actually fitting that he'd serve neither side. Even though he gave an oath to Ulfric, oath's will turn out to be meaningless. The Jagged Crown has corrupted Kahn the Kranium Krusher, his only purpose now being to conquer the entire realm for the Argonians, bringing about the apocalypse for human's and elves in the process. Ulfric, by dispatching Kahn on the quest for the Crown, has unwittingly doomed all of Skyrim.

I joined the Legion.
My pickpocket skill is minimal but I am an accomplished mage.
After I looted the Jagged Crown from the Deathlord , I paralyzed Hadvar and placed it on him via pickpocket.
I located him during the Defense of Whiterun , paralyzed him and took it back in similar manner.
Now I have the Jagged Crown without having to further advance the Civil War storyline if I so desire.
It is no longer a quest item and while it can`t be improved at a workbench , it CAN be enchanted.

It may not be able to be smithed, but you can wear a circlet under it and enchant that as well... giving you a total of 4 enchantment slots on your head alone. Not sure if you knew that or not.

Currently wearing it with the Aetherial Crown and would probably use it with Dragon Priest masks if my character was less resistant to covering her face.

It goes extremely well with the dragon priest masks from Solsthiem. Like they were meant to be used together. They blend together almost perfectly, fyi. I generally use Ahzidal's when I go that route for the flame buffs. In tandem with Ignite, it's about all the Destruction magic one needs.
