Vampire Lord form is way less fun than it should be

I've been doing a full Dawnguard run on my current playthrough and I keep getting disappointed by how clunky Vampire Lord actually plays. Like, the concept is incredible - you're supposed to feel like this powerful, terrifying creature - but the actual combat feels so slow and floaty compared to just being a regular character with spells.

The melee attacks have this weird delay to them, feeding is a pain to set up mid-combat, and half the time I'm just mashing the same spell over and over because the physical attacks don't feel rewarding. I get that they were trying to make it feel different from normal combat, but different doesn't have to mean worse.

Anyone else find themselves just transforming for a quest objective and then switching back? Or am I just bad at using it? I want to love this form but it feels like it needs way more investment than it's worth compared to just being a good old fashioned battlemage or something.
