Why does nobody talk about how good Markarth's questline actually is?

I just finished the whole Markarth chain on my 4th playthrough and I'm genuinely shocked this doesn't get more love. You've got the Forsworn Conspiracy which everyone rightly praises, but then the stuff that branches off from it - No One Escapes Cidhna Mine, the whole thing with Madanach and the Silver-Blood family - it's legitimately some of the best writing in the game.

Like, the moral ambiguity actually works here. You're not just picking "good guy" or "bad guy." Madanach is genuinely sympathetic even though he's a murderer, the Silver-Bloods are corrupt as hell, and the guards are complicit. And the game doesn't hold your hand about it. You can side with literally any faction and it feels earned based on what you've discovered.

Compare that to like, Solitude or Whiterun where the quests are just "go kill this thing" or "go talk to this person." Markarth actually makes you think about what you're doing and who you're helping. The location itself is cool, the NPCs have actual depth, and the questline has real consequences.

Am I just late to this or does Markarth genuinely not get talked about enough? Because I feel like if this questline got the same attention as Thieves Guild or Dark Brotherhood people would rank it way higher.

You're not late to this at all - Markarth's questline genuinely is underrated. The Forsworn Conspiracy gets its due, but yeah, the stuff that unfolds after is where it gets really interesting, and most people either don't dig into it or they're already checked out by then.

The thing that makes it work is exactly what you said: there's no clean answer. Madanach murdered people, full stop, but he's also the product of systemic oppression that the game actually shows you rather than just telling you about. The Silver-Bloods are obviously corrupt, but they also have the backing of the entire hold's authority. And the guards - especially Thonar - they're complicit in a way that feels real. It's not cartoon villainy.

What gets me is that the game lets you live with your choice. If you side with the Forsworn, Markarth changes. If you free Madanach, he actually stays in the Cidna Mine and you see the consequences. There's no "reload and pick the other option" moment where the game tells you you're wrong. That's rare in Skyrim.

I think it doesn't get talked about as much because the Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood are front-loaded with spectacle - you're stealing from the emperor, you're getting contracts, it's immediately cool. Markarth requires you to actually pay attention to what's happening in the hold, and a lot of people just grab the Daedric artifact quest or whatever and move on. Plus the location itself is a maze and kind of annoying to navigate, lol, which doesn't help.

But yeah, if more people actually finished that questline and thought about the implications, it'd definitely rank higher.
