Winterhold College is genuinely the worst faction questline and I'm tired of pretending

I just finished it again on my current playthrough and man, it really does not hold up. You get to the College, do like three radiant fetch quests, suddenly you're Arch-Mage, and then it's over. Compare that to the Thieves Guild where you're actually rebuilding something, or the Dark Brotherhood where every quest has personality, and Winterhold just feels like a checklist.

The worst part is the setup is so good. You've got this ancient magical institution that's fallen into decline, there's real tension between the different schools, Tolfdir seems like he's setting up something interesting... and then nothing. You just become the leader and that's it. No actual politics, no choosing sides, no real consequences. It's just "collect these books, fight Ancano, congratulations you're in charge now."

Oblivion's Mages Guild had actual depth to it. There were real conflicts, you had to prove yourself through different questlines, the factions within the guild actually mattered. Skyrim just hands you the position.

Anyone else skip it on replays or is it just me?

I get the frustration, but I think you're being a bit harsh on the setup stuff. Like, the early quests where you're meeting the different school leaders and doing their tasks - those actually do build character for the faction, even if they're fetch quests. You're learning what each school values, seeing the tension between Tolfdir and the others. It's not as explicit as you'd want, but it's there.

That said, yeah, the back half completely falls apart. The moment you become Arch-Mage it's just... over. There's no "now what?" questline, no actual management of the college, no payoff to any of that internal conflict you mentioned. Ancano shows up, you fight him, credits roll. Compare that to the Thieves Guild where you've got Blindsighted and then Darkness Returns - actual closure quests that feel earned - and Winterhold just peaces out.

I think the real problem is the college questline was meant to be longer and got cut, or the writers ran out of ideas halfway through. Because the bones are there - Tolfdir's mystery about the Eye of Magnus, the different schools, the implication that magic is dying in Skyrim - but none of it goes anywhere. You don't actually solve anything, you just become the figurehead.

I don't skip it, but I definitely don't love it. Oblivion comparison is fair though - that guild actually made you work for rank.
