Inheriting and NPC death in general

So yesterday, my Khajit thief is standing around Whiterun minding her own business. She stood there for some time near Arcadia's cauldron because in real life, I was typing on my laptop and I sometimes just do this, listening to the NPCs repeat themselves over about "choice cuts from the wild" and "shiny trinkets". Needless to say, nothing out of the ordinary happened in the hours I stood there, it was a nice, sunny, seemingly peaceful day, the kids were out playing, everything was fine.

Then suddenly out of the blue, comes a courier (wearing nothing but a hat and a rather questionable looking loin cloth which I suspect used to be his mother's old dishtowel) with an inheritance letter! How odd, I thought, since it seemed that nothing had happened. I'd been in Whiterun for days and actually I'd spent most of the time in doors reading books and harassing my kids to do chores (because why adopt if you're not going to be a slave driver?). There'd been no battles to speak off, nothing had occurred!

The inheritance letter stated that Belethor had passed...and that he'd left me 100 gold coins. First of all, I was shocked. Belethor was dead and all I got was a stinking 100 coins? I spend more than that on a single potion! What am I meant to do with 100 coins? Buy a couple of ales for that wino who sits outside of the inn in Riverwood? I spent hundreds of thousands in his poor excuse for a shop (which I KNOW I was the only customer of).

Secondly...I'm so confused. He died without any kind of battle occurring...what the...? I walked down to Warmaidens to sell the collection of crap I could no longer sell that gormless git since he died, and I find his fat lifeless arse spread across the path leading to Warmaidens.

So either...Belethor had a heartattack after Adrianne divulged her prices...or Adrianne's husband caught Belethor doing something rather obscene with his sword. Adrianne did seem rather suspicious with her walking back and forth to look at Belethor's dead meat while asking 'what happened?'.

I guess I'll never know :(

Lucky you. When I got such a letter with "plopsty" 100 gold (Moreover authorities took tax and I got only 90!!!) I don't even know person who end up being dead. So.... It occurs yes... But sometime you even don't know about who was that person "kindly" giving you whole 100 gold.

I always find it funny that I get an inheritance for the person I brutally murdered in cold blood, or sparks.

"Oh hey Janessa good work over there- Ahh...Killed her with a fireball..Oh well"

It's weird when you watch the NPC die in front of you and a few seconds later you get the inheritance letter

So far I've lost 4 NPCs due to dragon attacks. The morons go up against a huge fire or frost breathing lizard with an IRON DAGGER and NO ARMOR!

The sad thing is 3 of the 4 were shopkeepers. No more smith in Riverwood. No more alchemist in Dawnstar (that one hurt). At least I can still use the Riverwood Trader.

I gotta say though, those couriers can be lightening fast. Moments after the first dragon attack in Riverwood took dear Lucan and Alvor from me, he pops up with a letter.

The inheritance letters can be a riot to receive, really. There seems not to be any rhyme or reason sometimes. People just up and die or get murdered by rabid vampires or Mysterious Travelers and suddenly, you're an heir.

It's especially humorous when they come from NPCs who are not *supposed* to be able to increase their affection level toward you. People like Mercer Frey. I received this letter on his behalf, which, if you've done the Thieves Guild questline, is understandably hilarious - and kinda sad and awkward.

Still not sure how I managed to make him like me to the extent of giving me inheritance. But, it happens, I suppose? o_O

The real story here is that Mercer only gave Penelope three-hundred gold pieces. This fool had coin leaking out of his ears, and he only deemed her worthy of a measly three-hundred septims. How cheap. I suggest she raid his mattress at once.

Are you aware how many times I needed to kill the dragon until I finally killed it without Alvor dying on me... his death wasn't acceptable for me.

Probably he didn't updated his will... Maybe he was thinking: "He/She is dead anyway no danger will come at me... no need to change the will now."

I have NPC's die randomly also, then I somehow get the blame. Someone in Morthal died and I got a letter from someone saying I did it and they were thanking me for killing said person, that they wouldn't be missed etc. I was like on the other side of Skyrim, so I'm starting to wonder if there is like a evil twin roaming the wilds.

Belethor likes to stand around the front gate, especially when you fast travel to Whiterun, and if a vampire or dawnguard attack happens, belethor is the first to go. I got my letter of inheritance for belethor right after not even 4 quests into the dawnguard storyline.

He's an Imperial sympathizer so I have mixed feelings about his death. I regret the potential loss of income but from my character's point of view, it's good riddance. On the plus side, possibly due to a game glitch, his body is permanently dead. I'm going to drag it to an abandoned shack in the middle of nowhere and use it for safe storage.

The legendary dragons tend to kill almost every NPC it attacks. I was at a Imperial held fort and a legendary dragon came, I was watching the Imperials attacking and getting killed quite fast, it was then I actually noticed there are NPC's called 'Fort Commander' so I was like "Oh an Officer, perhaps he will rally his forces..." Dragon picked him up in his mouth and shook him around then threw him across the court yard. It was the only NPC I felt sorry for when he died, named NPC's have it easy. It's the no named people that die all the time. I didn't even know his name, yet he gave his life in a doomed fight. I took his sword and stabbed it into the ground on a hill, placing mountain flowers next to it. I salute you generic Imperial Commander.

People without name tags are always the first to die.

Well, his reasoning makes a very good and logical sense to me, when it comes to sides. That is why I share the same opinion about it. :)

I suspect that Mercer Frey took every single one of those gold coins, and slipped it between his arse cheeks before putting it in a box ready for the day he snuffs it. If I inherited any gold from that geezer, I'd tell the courier (who did have a tendency to show up wearing nothing but poorly constructed underwear and a hat) to keep it go buy some Calvin Kleins, some fine clothes and a BATH TUB.
