No Thieves Guild for me

I think I understand what you're saying (please correct me if I'm wrong though - long day). After all, the game itself imposes only a basic premise of 'morality' in the form of crime detection. Other than that, it's entirely up to the player to project their own personal or fictional values on events and actions depending on how they choose to play their character.

And that's fine. Until the game presents you with an event that runs contrary to your characters chosen morality, whichever way that goes. Do you just adapt your characters morality to work around that potential clash, or continue to strictly RP it to form and struggle to reconcile your actions?

For me, that's the potential crux of the issue.

It's not a major one in the greater scheme of things, admittedly. But can still cause players some trouble, or possibly distress if they feel that they cannot legitimately RP around the presented issue and stay within their character's personality.

Ugh...I think I need some coffee... :p

Kinda what I'm saying. I guess what I should add is that you are talking to an old school AD&D player (Advanced Dungeons and Dragons) from way, way back. I was role playing fantasy and pretending to be someone else for fun for a long time now. As a true-blue RPG'er, you almost have to approach it as an actor would a role to truly enjoy a role playing experience. Skyrim is just scratching the surface of what a great RPG could be. But future sure does look bright indeed.

Long story short, when I create a disgruntled orc that has a beef with his own race and who only knows death as a consequence, I jump in all the way. Even orcs hiding behind the guise of a bard will be executed... until something happens along the line to change my thinking. Maybe I pick up a stray dog and spend some time with it. Maybe I learn the value of companionship the first time he jumps in and starts helping in a fight. Maybe I suffer remorse for what I have done and spend the rest of my days growing crops and hand delivering them to each orc stronghold.

Skyrim gives us a great world to interact with and as a true RPG'er, I'm really impressed by it. A lot of you guys are making it way too complicated. Lol. I'm myself for 90% of the day, why would I want to be myself in Skyrim? Especially when every mofo on the planet is trying to kill me.

To be honest, I only really do the Thieves Guild for the extra vendors. I'm not particularly fond of the quests nor the NPCs.

I bloody loathe the Nightingales too.

Interesting. From what you've now said, it's clear that you have a long-standing approach to playing RPG's. That's what works for you, and there's nowt wrong with that. However, I would say that, as someone who's played quite a few RPGs myself over the years, going back to text based games in the early 80's, I feel it would be presumptuous to suggest that there is only one key methodology for approaching an RPG and character development. The very nature of an RPG should be a personal one, and the player should be free, within reason, to approach it and interpret their experience within it as they wish from a individual viewpoint. Besides, not all RPGs are the same, meant to be the same or intended to be played in the same manner...fortunately.:)

You certainly make many interesting, sensible and valid points. But, forgive me for saying so, I'm getting the impression that because of your long personal experience with RPGs that you are seeing the way you approach them as the proper way and that the noobs are just doing it wrong (my words, not yours). ;)

If that is the case, I think we'll have to agree to disagree on that point though.

What I dislike about the Skyrim thieves guild is that it lacks the romantic "Robin Hood" feel that Oblivion's guild had... I loved the Oblivion thieves guild... This one simply leaves me with a sour taste in my mouth and feeling disgusted with the character's actions...

I was merely sharing my approach. I dont recall stating it was the only. Sounds like you want to debate a non issue. Pass. Feel free to approach the video game any way you want. Thats the great thing about solo games, nobody cares about the moral struggles your character faces. If I really wanted to debate you I might suggest that people who adhere to strict moral code in Skyrim are compensating for real life shortcoming in that department. But I dont so I wont.

I don't like how I couldn't take any of those thieves as followers. and those burglary/fishing/numbers jobs just dragged on and on.

Maven only acts like a b*tch because she knows that she can't be killed. If only she knew that there was a console command to end her immortal in-game status, she might sing a different tune, like the one in this video:
