I think I understand what you're saying (please correct me if I'm wrong though - long day). After all, the game itself imposes only a basic premise of 'morality' in the form of crime detection. Other than that, it's entirely up to the player to project their own personal or fictional values on events and actions depending on how they choose to play their character.
And that's fine. Until the game presents you with an event that runs contrary to your characters chosen morality, whichever way that goes. Do you just adapt your characters morality to work around that potential clash, or continue to strictly RP it to form and struggle to reconcile your actions?
For me, that's the potential crux of the issue.
It's not a major one in the greater scheme of things, admittedly. But can still cause players some trouble, or possibly distress if they feel that they cannot legitimately RP around the presented issue and stay within their character's personality.
Ugh...I think I need some coffee...![]()
Kinda what I'm saying. I guess what I should add is that you are talking to an old school AD&D player (Advanced Dungeons and Dragons) from way, way back. I was role playing fantasy and pretending to be someone else for fun for a long time now. As a true-blue RPG'er, you almost have to approach it as an actor would a role to truly enjoy a role playing experience. Skyrim is just scratching the surface of what a great RPG could be. But future sure does look bright indeed.
Long story short, when I create a disgruntled orc that has a beef with his own race and who only knows death as a consequence, I jump in all the way. Even orcs hiding behind the guise of a bard will be executed... until something happens along the line to change my thinking. Maybe I pick up a stray dog and spend some time with it. Maybe I learn the value of companionship the first time he jumps in and starts helping in a fight. Maybe I suffer remorse for what I have done and spend the rest of my days growing crops and hand delivering them to each orc stronghold.
Skyrim gives us a great world to interact with and as a true RPG'er, I'm really impressed by it. A lot of you guys are making it way too complicated. Lol. I'm myself for 90% of the day, why would I want to be myself in Skyrim? Especially when every mofo on the planet is trying to kill me.
