Morrowind's journal system actually lets you miss the entire story

I just realized something replaying through OpenMW. Skyrim and Oblivion basically force-feed you quest objectives. Your journal auto-updates, markers appear, NPCs repeat themselves. But Morrowind? Morrowind will let you completely miss what an NPC said because you weren't paying attention, and then that quest line just... closes off to you.

I was doing a House Hlaalu run and some dude gave me directions to a location using actual compass directions and landmark descriptions. No marker. I wrote it down like an idiot and then forgot about it for like 20 levels. By the time I remembered, I'd progressed so far in the faction that the quest was apparently no longer available. The game just moved on without me.

Skyrim would never. It would put a marker on your map, add it to your active quests, probably have an NPC remind you if you talked to them again. Morrowind treats you like you're supposed to actually be paying attention to what people say. It's genuinely unsettling compared to modern design, but I think I actually respect it more now? Like the game trusts you to care enough to remember things.

Does anyone else remember getting completely locked out of stuff in Morrowind just because you weren't thorough enough with note-taking? Or am I just bad at this game lol

you're not bad at the game, that's just morrowind lol. the journal system is brutal and honestly part of why people either love it or bounce off it hard. but yeah, you can absolutely softlock yourself out of questlines by missing dialogue or not following up on vague directions in time.

the house hlaalu thing is a perfect example because those factions have actual progression - you rank up, npcs change their dialogue, some quests expire if you've moved past a certain point in the faction chain. skyrim's radiant quest system means there's always something to do, but morrowind actually cares about your choices and timing in a way that can punish you.

that said, I think people sometimes overstate how easy it is to permanently miss stuff. most of the time if you talk to the same npcs again they'll repeat the quest dialogue or give you the objective again. but if you've already progressed too far in a faction or killed someone crucial, yeah, you're done. and the game doesn't hold your hand about it.

the compass directions thing is wild though. I've definitely had moments where someone gives me directions and I'm like "okay so... north-northeast past the tall rock formation?" and then I wander around for ten minutes completely lost because landmarks aren't consistent or I'm facing the wrong direction. there's a reason a lot of people just use the console to teleport or pull up a wiki lol.

I think that's actually why morrowind feels more immersive to some people despite being clunkier - the game respects your attention span and memory in a way modern rpgs don't.
